Daniel Foray (Gérard Depardieu) ist der Anführer einer Diebesbande, die in Paris ihr Unwesen treibt. Ein angeblich todsicherer Tipp führt sie nach Chicago, wo sie hoffen, mit einem Juwelenraub den großen Coup zu landen. Doch von Anfang an geht alles schief. Sie geraten in ein übles Viertel, wo sie sich gleich mit dem Anführer einer Schwarzen-Gang anlegen. Auf der anschließenden Flucht knacken sie ausgerechnet den Wagen eines Chicagoer Gangsterbosses. Als sie sich endlich am Ziel glauben, brechen sie in das falsche Haus ein, überwältigen den Bewohner und rauben ihn aus. Zu spät bemerken sie, dass es sich um den berüchtigten Mafiaboss Zammeti (Harvey Keitel) handelt, der nun auf fürchterliche Rache sinnt.Doch nicht genug. Zammetis Haus stand unter Beobachtung des FBIs, das natürlich an den Dokumenten und Kassetten interessiert ist, die das Gaunerquintett mitgehen ließ. Was nun folgt, ist eine unbeschreibliche Hetzjagd quer durch Chicago. Verfolgt von der Mafia, dem FBI und der Polizei, versuchen die unglücklichen Ganoven, aus Chicago zu entkommen. Sie müssen sich etwas einfallen lassen, um zu überleben. Oder gelingt es doch noch, den Coup zu Ende zu führen?

Daniel Foray (Gérard Depardieu) is the leader of a gang of thieves who are up to mischief in Paris. A supposedly surefire tip leads them to Chicago, where they hope to land the big coup with a jewel robbery. But everything goes wrong right from the start. They get into a bad neighborhood, where they immediately get into a fight with the leader of a black gang. On the subsequent escape, they break into the car of a Chicago gangster boss, of all things. When they finally believe they have reached their goal, they break into the wrong house, overpower the inhabitant and rob him. Too late, they realize that it is the notorious mafia boss Zammeti (Harvey Keitel), who is now plotting terrible revenge. But that's not all. Zammeti's house was under observation by the FBI, which is of course interested in the documents and tapes that the crook quintet took with them. What follows now is an indescribable chase across Chicago. Pursued by the Mafia, the FBI and the police, the unfortunate crooks try to escape from Chicago. They have to come up with something to survive. Or will it still be possible to complete the coup?
