Die australische Backpackerin Clare (Teresa Palmer) zieht mit dem Fotoapparat durch Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, besonders die alten DDR-Bauten haben es ihr angetan. Was als Romanze beginnt, nimmt eine unerwartet finstere Wendung. Am nächsten Morgen, Andi ist schon in der Schule, will Clare seine Wohnung in einem ansonsten leerstehenden Altbau verlassen und merkt, dass sie eingeschlossen ist. Basierend auf dem gleichnamigen Bestseller von Melanie Joosten sprengt 'Berlin Syndrom' gängige Suspense-Konventionen und erzählt die Geschichte einer jungen Berlin-Touristin, die sich erst durch eine schier ausweglos erscheinende Extremsituation ihrer eigenen Kraft zu besinnen lernt. "Mich interessieren Charaktere in Extremsituationen und ihre Veränderungen", sagt Shortland. "Da ist Andi, der die einzelnen Teile seines Lebens in so klare Schubladen teilen kann, dass alles so vermeintlich vernünftig daherkommt. Und da ist natürlich Clare, die aus einer merkwürdigen Sehnsucht bei Andi bleibt und sich neu erfinden muss, als Kämpferin." Prominent besetzt mit Stars wie Max Riemelt, Teresa Palmer und Matthias Habich feierte Shortlands Film seine Uraufführung auf dem 'Sundance' Filmfestival 2017, seine Europapremiere im Panorama der 'Berlinale' und wurde schließlich bei den 'Fantasy Filmfest Nights' 2017 gezeigt.

With 'Berlin Syndrom' (2017), Cate Shortland (see previously 'Somersault - Like Perfume in the Air' 2004 and 'Lore' 2012) has once again succeeded in creating an impressive portrait of a female self-discovery. Based on the bestseller of the same name by Melanie Joosten, 'Berlin Syndrome' breaks with common suspense conventions and tells the story of a young Berlin tourist who only learns to reflect on her own strength through an almost hopeless extreme situation. "I'm interested in characters in extreme situations and their changes," says Shortland. "There is Andi, who can divide the individual parts of his life into such clear drawers that everything comes across as supposedly reasonable. And of course there is Clare, who stays with Andi out of a strange longing and has to reinvent herself as a fighter." Starring stars such as Max Riemelt, Teresa Palmer and Matthias Habich, Shortland's film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, had its European premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlinale and was finally shown at the 2017 Fantasy Filmfest Nights.
