Der ärmliche Fischer Giovanni Squarciò (Yves Montand) hat es satt, hier an der eigentlich schönen Adriaküste so ein dürftiges Leben zu führen. Er sieht einen Ausweg darin, mehr Fische zu fangen als die restlichen Fischer seiner Umgebung und so ersinnt er sich eine neue Fangmethode. Mithilfe von alter Kriegsmunition stellt er sich Dynamitstangen her, mit denen er ab sofort auf das Mittelmeer hinaus fährt. Ihm gelingt es mit dieser drastischen Methode tatsächlich mehr Fische zu fangen als die restlichen seiner Kollegen mit ihren Netzen. Eine zeitlang dulden sie seine neuen Praktiken, denn er hält sich vom Dorf fern, doch bald schon kommt ihm die Polizei auf die Schliche...

The poor fisherman Giovanni Squarciò (Yves Montand) is tired of leading such a poor life here on the actually beautiful Adriatic coast. He sees a way out in catching more fish than the rest of the fishermen in his area and so he comes up with a new fishing method. With the help of old war ammunition, he makes dynamite sticks, with which he immediately sails out into the Mediterranean. With this drastic method, he actually manages to catch more fish than the rest of his colleagues with their nets. For a while they tolerate his new practices, because he stays away from the village, but soon the police catch up with him...
