Charlie Nguyens 'The Rebel' ist die teuerste vietnamesische Filmproduktion aller Zeiten. Seine Mischung aus Action- und Historienfilm weiß neben Schnitt, Kamera, Set- und Lichtgestaltung vor allem durch grandiose Martial-Arts-Kampfszenen und Feuergefechte den Zuschauer in seinen Bann zu ziehen. Dass die Martial-Arts-Sequenzen hervorragend choreographiert sind, verwundert nicht: Hauptdarsteller Johnny Nguyen hat bereits an der Seite von Jet Li und Tony Jaa wie auch als Stuntman in vielen Hollywood-Filmen wie 'Jarhead' und 'Serenity and Collateral' mehrfach sein Publikum überzeugt. Auch wenn sein Gesicht vielen unbekannt sein dürfte, so kennt man ihn auch als denjenigen im Spiderman-Kostüm.

Vietnam, 1922. The country has been under French colonial rule for half a century. The burden of high taxes, expropriation and forced labour calls the Vietnamese peasants to armed resistance, which is answered by the French occupiers with arbitrary robbery, internment camps and executions. An elite unit of Vietnamese undercover agents is formed to destroy the Vietnamese rebel units. Le Van Cuong (Johnny Nguyen) is one of them, but he becomes more and more doubtful as to which side is the right one: that of the traitorous henchman or that of his own people. When he meets the captured rebel Thanh (Ngo Thanh Van), he helps her escape. A hunt for the two begins...
Charlie Nguyen's 'The Rebel' is the most expensive Vietnamese film production of all time. His mixture of action and historical film knows how to captivate the viewer not only with editing, camera, set and lighting design, but above all with grandiose martial arts fight scenes and firefights. It is not surprising that the martial arts sequences are excellently choreographed: lead actor Johnny Nguyen has already convinced his audience several times alongside Jet Li and Tony Jaa as well as as a stuntman in many Hollywood films such as 'Jarhead' and 'Serenity and Collateral'. Even though his face may be unknown to many, he is also known as the one in the Spiderman costume.
