Im Londoner Hyde Park wird die Leiche der jungen Referendarin Emily Procter (Isabella Calthorpe) aufgefunden: Ihr wurde mit einem spitzen Gegenstand die Halsschlagader durchtrennt. Inspector Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) und Sergeant Havers (Sharon Small) finden in Emilys Wohnung zunächst keine verwertbaren Spuren, nur ein neu installiertes Video-Sicherheitssystem erregt ihre Aufmerksamkeit, denn es passt nicht zu dem bescheidenen Appartement. Außerdem finden sich eine Anzahl von teuren Blumensträußen in der Wohnung, alle vom selben Kurierdienst zugestellt und jeder einzelne mit einer leeren Karte versehen. Emilys Eltern, Deborah (Diana Hardcastle) und Guy Proctor (David Yelland), berichten stolz, dass Emily nach ihrem Abschluss beim Staranwalt Tony Wainwright (Samuel West) als Referendarin gearbeitet hat. Ein Besuch Lynleys in der Kanzlei des auf internationales Menschenrecht spezialisierten Anwalts fördert jedoch eine andere Wahrheit zutage: Emily ist seit längerer Zeit nicht mehr in der Kanzlei erschienen. Hester Reed (Lindsey Coulson), Wainwrights Bürovorsteherin, vermutet, dass der jungen Frau der tägliche Stress zuviel geworden ist. Dann ergibt Laffertys (Paul Hickey) Untersuchung, dass Emily mit 23 Jahren noch Jungfrau war. Und als Lynley und Havers erfahren, dass die junge Frau für ihre Halbschwester Lisa Conroy (Georgia Mackenzie) gearbeitet hat, die als Geschäftsführerin eines Internetunternehmens Online-Peepshows ins Netz stellt, kommt endlich Bewegung in die Ermittlung. The body of the young trainee Emily Procter (Isabella Calthorpe) is found in London's Hyde Park: her carotid artery has been severed with a sharp object. Inspector Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) and Sergeant Havers (Sharon Small) initially find no usable traces in Emily's apartment, only a newly installed video security system attracts their attention, because it does not fit the modest apartment. In addition, there are a number of expensive bouquets of flowers in the apartment, all delivered by the same courier service and each one with a blank card. Emily's parents, Deborah (Diana Hardcastle) and Guy Proctor (David Yelland), proudly report that Emily worked as a trainee lawyer for star lawyer Tony Wainwright (Samuel West) after graduating. However, a visit by Lynley to the law firm of the lawyer specializing in international human rights law brings another truth to light: Emily has not appeared at the law firm for a long time. Hester Reed (Lindsey Coulson), Wainwright's office manager, suspects that the daily stress has become too much for the young woman. Then Lafferty's (Paul Hickey) investigation reveals that Emily was still a virgin at the age of 23. And when Lynley and Havers learn that the young woman has worked for her half-sister Lisa Conroy (Georgia Mackenzie), who, as the managing director of an Internet company, puts online peep shows on the net, the investigation finally gets moving. Has Emily fallen victim to one of her clients or is there more to her relationship with the law firm Wainwright?
