Als Doktor Morita aus dem offenen Bauch einer zur Notoperation eingelieferten Patientin der Kopf des Dämonenmädchens Tomie entgegen blinzelt, ist es um seinen Verstand geschehen. Tomie aber, der bald ein properer Körper dazu wächst, flieht aus dem Krankenhaus an der Seite des schwer verliebten Takeshi (Masatoshi Matsuo). Als Yumi (Sayaka Yamaguchi), die Tochter des verrückt gewordenen Operateurs, der verstörenden Angelegenheit auf den Grund gehen will, tut sie sich mit Takeshis bestem Kumpel Fumihito Sato (Yôsuke Kubozuka) zusammen...
Der zweite Teil des 'Tomie' Franchises 'Tomie 2 - Replay' (2000) zeigt unter der Regie von Tomijiro Mitsuishi eine deutliche Entwicklung. Die Handlung ist in sich stimmiger und greifbarer. Die Momente absoluter Belanglosigkeit gibt es in 'Tomie Replay' nicht mehr. Dafür startet der Film mit einer starken, wirklich unheimlichen Geburtsszene, die auch visuell sehr interessant gestaltet ist. Von da an baut der Film sein Mysterium auf und sorgt für einige erschreckend grausige Szenen, die durchaus dazu angetan sind, beim unbedarften Zuschauer Gänsehaut zu erzeugen. Wie schon beim ersten Film gelingt es, eine durchgehend bedrohliche Atmosphäre zu schaffen. Erst im letzten Drittel lässt der Film ein wenig nach, denn als er zu dem Moment kommt, da er Tomies Ursprung erklärt, wird er etwas zu genau und vernichtet damit einen guten Teil des eigenen Mysteriums. Wo 'Tomie' zu vage war, ist 'Tomie Replay' zu explizit. Dennoch ändert dies nichts daran, dass 'Tomie Replay' ein effektiver Horrorfilm ist, abseits gängiger US-Konventionen für frischen Wind in der Genre-Bude sorgt. Fazit: Gänsehautgarantie.

The second part of the 'Tomie' franchise 'Tomie 2 - Replay' (2000) shows a clear development under the direction of Tomijiro Mitsuishi. The plot is more coherent and tangible. The moments of absolute triviality no longer exist in 'Tomie Replay'. Instead, the film starts with a strong, really eerie birth scene, which is also visually very interesting. From then on, the movie builds up its mystery and provides some frighteningly gruesome scenes, which are quite capable of giving the uninitiated viewer goosebumps. As with the first film, it succeeds in creating a consistently threatening atmosphere. Only in the last third does the movie let up a bit, because when it gets to the moment when it explains Tomie's origin, it becomes a bit too precise and thus destroys a good part of its own mystery. Where 'Tomie' was too vague, 'Tomie Replay' is too explicit. Nevertheless, this doesn't change the fact that 'Tomie Replay' is an effective horror film, which provides a breath of fresh air in the genre booth away from common US conventions. Conclusion: Goosebumps guaranteed.
