In this superb, moving film by Sam Peckinpah ('The Wild Bunch'), cowboy legends Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea play roles that are tailor-made for them. As aging law enforcement officers, they take over the guarding of a gold transport. They don't have much: a horse and a few dollars each. But they have everything they need: their independence. But the Wild West is slowly disappearing and with it the country that offers such men enough freedom. If they are lucky, the landscape is big enough for this last ride, maybe they can cash in one more time. In any case, they experience a tangible adventure: the dramatic rescue of a bride (Mariette Hartley) who has been badly treated, leaden shootouts and a betrayal that changes her life. 'Sacramento' is not only a thrilling Western, but also a heartfelt homage to the entire genre - a living example of what has made this film genre great.
