Irgendwo mitten im Ionischen Meer liegt die griechische Insel Kephallonia. Obwohl fast ganz Europa bereits in den Wirren des Zweiten Weltkrieges steckt, führen die Bewohner ein einfaches, aber glückliches Leben. Der Arzt Dr. Iannis (John Hurt) kümmert sich mit seiner eigenwilligen und ehrgeizigen Tochter Pelagia (Penélope Cruz) hauptsächlich um kleinere Unfälle. Als der Fischer Mandras (Christian Bale) bei einem Dorffest unabsichtlich einen Streifschuss am Hintern abbekommt und Pelagia ihn mit ihrem Vater behandelt, wird schnell klar, dass Mandras ein Auge auf Pelagia geworfen hat. Ihr Vater ist zwar fest davon überzeugt, dass die Liebe zwischen seiner intelligenten Tochter und dem ungebildeten Mandras nicht halten kann, aber da er den Dickkopf seiner Tochter kennt, lässt er sie gewähren. Doch schon bald holt der Krieg sie ein: Mandras verlässt das Dorf, um erst in der Armee gegen die Italiener und dann im Untergrund gegen die Deutschen zu kämpfen. Von dem Moment an hört Pelagia nichts mehr von ihm und auch auf ihre Briefe erhält sie keine Antwort. Wenig später landen Mussolinis Truppen auf der Insel - in Form einer höchst eigentümlichen Kompanie unter Hauptmann Corelli (Nicolas Cage), die ihre 'Besatzung' eher als eine Art bezahlten Urlaub ansieht und lieber Opernarien schmettert als mit Gewehren zu drohen. Ausgerechnet der überaus charmante und lebenslustige Corelli wird bei Dr. Iannis einquartiert. Fast gegen ihren Willen werden die Dorfbewohner nach und nach vom Charme der Italiener verzaubert - und auch Pelagia macht da keine Ausnahme. Zwischen ihr und Corelli entwickelt sich eine Liebesgeschichte. Und auch als die Deutsche Wehrmacht nachrückt, scheint alles beim Alten zu bleiben. Leider währt das Glück und die scheinbare Idylle nur kurz. Als die Italienische Armee vor den Alliierten kapituliert, erhält die Wehrmacht den Befehl, Corellis Truppe zu entwaffnen - und zu erschießen. Einzig Corelli überlebt das Massaker und kann mit Hilfe von Dr. Iannis und Mandras fliehen. Und obwohl Pelagia nicht weiß, ob sie Corelli jemals wiedersehen wird, weiß sie doch eines: dass sie ihn liebt.

Somewhere in the middle of the Ionian Sea lies the Greek island of Kephallonia. Although almost all of Europe is already mired in the turmoil of the Second World War, the inhabitants lead a simple but happy life. The doctor Dr. Iannis (John Hurt) and his headstrong and ambitious daughter Pelagia (Penélope Cruz) mainly take care of minor accidents. When the fisherman Mandras (Christian Bale) unintentionally gets a grazing shot in the buttocks at a village festival and Pelagia treats him with her father, it quickly becomes clear that Mandras has his eye on Pelagia. Her father is firmly convinced that the love between his intelligent daughter and the uneducated Mandras cannot last, but since he knows his daughter's stubbornness, he lets her be. But soon the war catches up with her: Mandras leaves the village to fight first in the army against the Italians and then in the underground against the Germans. From that moment on, Pelagia hears nothing more from him and she also receives no answer to her letters. A little later, Mussolini's troops land on the island - in the form of a highly peculiar company under Captain Corelli (Nicolas Cage), which sees its 'occupation' more as a kind of paid vacation and prefers to belt out opera arias rather than threaten with guns. Of all people, the extremely charming and fun-loving Corelli is accommodated with Dr. Iannis. Almost against their will, the villagers are gradually enchanted by the charm of the Italians - and Pelagia is no exception. A love story develops between her and Corelli. And even when the German Wehrmacht moves up, everything seems to remain the same. Unfortunately, the happiness and the apparent idyll only lasts for a short time. When the Italian army capitulates to the Allies, the Wehrmacht receives the order to disarm Corelli's troops - and shoot them. Only Corelli survives the massacre and manages to escape with the help of Dr. Iannis and Mandras. And although Pelagia doesn't know if she will ever see Corelli again, she does know one thing: that she loves him.
