New York im Spätsommer 1980. Paul (Banks Repeta) ist das jüngste Mitglied einer gut situierten jüdischen Familie. Doch zwischen seiner viel beschäftigten Mutter Esther (Anne Hathaway), seinem bemühten, aber strengen Vater Irving (Jeremy Strong) und seinem streitsüchtigen Bruder Ted (Ryan Sell) fühlt er sich oft einsam und verloren. Allein sein liebevoller Großvater Aaron (Anthony Hopkins) scheint ihn wirklich zu verstehen und seine Interessen zu fördern. Zu Beginn des neuen Schuljahres lernt Paul den Schwarzen Jonathan (Jaylin Webb) kennen, einen Sitzenbleiber, der in ärmlichen Verhältnissen bei seiner kranken Großmutter lebt. Er freundet sich mit dem älteren Jungen an, der allen Problemen zum Trotz fest an Werte wie Ehrlichkeit und Loyalität glaubt. Doch es dauert nicht lange, bis Paul immer mehr bewusst wird, dass nicht jeder in dieser Welt die gleichen Chancen hat...
Mit 'Zeiten des Umbruchs' alias 'Armageddon Time' (2022) präsentiert der gefeierte Regisseur James Gray (siehe zuletzt 'Die versunkene Stadt Z' 2016 und 'Ad Astra - Zu den Sternen' 2019) ein zutiefst persönliches Coming-of-Age-Drama über Familie, Freundschaft und die für viele aussichtslose Suche nach dem amerikanischen Traum. Bei seiner Weltpremiere auf den Filmfestspielen in Cannes erhielt Grays teils autobiografisches Drama stehende Ovationen. Sein Film erzählt sensibel vom Aufwachsen im Amerika Anfang der 80er Jahre, einem Amerika, das geprägt ist von allgegenwärtigem Rassismus, elitären Machtgefügen und tiefgreifenden Vorurteilen. Dabei zeigt der Film ein ungleiches System auf, in dem nicht alle Menschen gleichberechtigt behandelt werden. Vor der Kamera versammelte Gray eine hochkarätige Besetzung, angeführt von Oscar-Preisträgerin Anne Hathaway ('Les Misérables') neben der zweifachen Oscar-Hollywoodlegende Anthony Hopkins ('Das Schweigen der Lämmer'), Anne Hathaway als Esther Graff sowie Emmy-Gewinner Jeremy Strong ('The Trial of the Chicago 7') als Irving Graff. Die zweifach Emmy-nominierte Tovah Feldshuh ('Clifford der große rote Hund') ist als Großmutter Mickey zu sehen, während in der Hauptrolle des Paul der 14-jährige Jungstar Banks Repeta ('The Devil All the Time') eine eindrucksvolle Darstellung abliefert. Die Leinwand-Premiere fand am 19. Mai 2022 auf dem Cannes Filmfestival statt, der Kinostart in den USA ist am 28. Oktober 2022 und in Deutschland am 24. November 2022 erreicht.
