Marlene (Sandra Hüller) lebt mit ihrer Tochter Mona (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) in Hamburg und leidet unter krankhaft wiederkehrenden Albträumen. In einer Zeitungsannonce glaubt sie den realen Schauplatz ihrer Albträume entdeckt zu haben: das Hotel Sonnenhügel im Dorf Stainbach. Heimlich reist sie in den idyllisch gelegenen Ort, wo sich ihre Befürchtungen bestätigen. Als sie herausfindet, dass ihre Albträume in Verbindung mit drei Selbstmorden stehen, fällt sie in einen komatösen Schlaf und landet in der Psychiatrie. Mona will ihrer Mutter helfen und begibt sich in dem verschlafenen Dorf auf Spurensuche. Hotelbesitzer Otto empfängt sie überaus freundlich, doch bereits in der ersten Nacht im Hotel wird Mona selbst von einem Albtraum aufgewühlt. Es ist der Auftakt einer Achterbahnfahrt in den verstörenden Abgrund von Monas ungeahnter Familiengeschichte. Marlene (Sandra Hüller) lives with her daughter Mona (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) in Hamburg and suffers from pathologically recurring nightmares. In a newspaper advertisement, she believes she has discovered the real scene of her nightmares: the Hotel Sonnenhügel in the village of Stainbach. Secretly, she travels to the idyllic village, where her fears are confirmed. When she finds out that her nightmares are connected to three suicides, she falls into a comatose sleep and ends up in a psychiatric ward. Mona wants to help her mother and goes in search of clues in the sleepy village. Hotel owner Otto welcomes her very friendly, but already on the first night in the hotel Mona herself is stirred up by a nightmare. It is the prelude to a roller coaster ride into the disturbing abyss of Mona's unimagined family history. Dream and reality blur - and an old curse draws fresh strength from Mona...
