Irgendwo in den endlosen Weiten des Mittleren Westens. Jonas Ford (Josh Wiggins) ist fünfzehn und hat genug vom harten Leben auf der Farm seiner Eltern. Als die hübsche Casey Caraway (Sophie Nélisse) mit ihrem Vater Wayne (Bill Paxton) ein Haus in der Nähe bezieht, verknallt sich der Farmersjunge bis über beide Ohren in das Mädchen und von nun an sind die beiden unzertrennlich. Das führt bald zu einem ernsthaften Konflikt mit ihrem Vater, der als verbitterter Polizist seine Tochter mit strenger Hand regiert. Dann stolpert Jonas auch noch durch Zufall in Waynes geschickt eingefädelten Drogendeal, der unverhofft aus dem Ruder läuft. Unter Lebensgefahr verschwindet der Junge in der finsteren Nacht, mit einer Tasche voller Geld und der entgeisterten Casey im Schlepptau. Verfolgt vom korrupten Gesetzeshüter und der gesamten Polizei flüchten Jonas und Casey durch ein atemberaubend schönes aber unbarmherziges Land, das ihre Liebe zueinander auf den Prüfstand stellt und ihr zukünftiges Leben bedroht. Somewhere in the endless expanses of the Midwest. Jonas Ford (Josh Wiggins) is fifteen and has had enough of the hard life on his parents' farm.
