Die portugiesische Geschichtsprofessorin Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira) möchte mit ihrer Tochter Maria (Filipa de Almeida) ihren Mann in Bombay besuchen. Nicht zufällig wählt Rosa den Seeweg und schifft sich und ihre Tochter in Lissabon ein. Sie verfolgt damit den alten Traum Portugals vom Seeweg nach Indien. Die Reise führt sie vorbei an den Denkmälern für Heinrich den Seefahrer und Vasco da Gama, den Ruinen der Akropolis, an Pompeji, Istanbul, durch den Suez-Kanal bis hin zu den Pyramiden von Gizeh. Die Gespräche mit den Mitreisenden an Bord (Catherine Deneuve, Stefania Sandrelli, Irene Papas) drehen sich um die alte und neue Kultur in den Schmelztiegeln der Menschheit. Abends sitzen die Vertreter dieser Kulturen zusammen am Tisch des Kapitäns John Walesa (John Malkovich) und ergötzen sich an den Erlebnissen des Tages. Doch diese Beschaulichkeit endet abrupt, als das Schiff eine Bombendrohung erhält und evakuiert werden muss.

The Portuguese history professor Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira) wants to visit her husband in Bombay with her daughter Maria (Filipa de Almeida). It is no coincidence that Rosa chooses the sea route and embarks herself and her daughter in Lisbon. She is thus pursuing Portugal's old dream of a sea route to India. The journey takes them past the monuments to Henry the Navigator and Vasco da Gama, the ruins of the Acropolis, Pompeii, Istanbul, through the Suez Canal to the pyramids of Giza. The conversations with the fellow passengers on board (Catherine Deneuve, Stefania Sandrelli, Irene Papas) revolve around the old and new culture in the melting pots of humanity. In the evening, the representatives of these cultures sit together at the table of Captain John Walesa (John Malkovich) and enjoy the day's experiences. But this tranquillity ends abruptly when the ship receives a bomb threat and has to be evacuated.
