Robin Hood (Hans von Borsody), der edle Räuber mit sanfter Seele und harten Fäusten, lebt mit seiner Räuberschaft im Wald von 'Sherwood'. Während er den Armen hilft, beutet der perfide Sir Douglas, Sheriff von Nottingham (Benno Hoffmann) die Bauern aus, tyrannisiert sie und steckt die Steuern in die eigene Tasche. Denn seiner Ansicht nach, ist zum Geldabliefern niemand zu arm. Das kann der Volksheld natürlich nicht hinnehmen, und so nimmt er Lady Emily (Ingrid van Bergen), die Frau des Sheriffs, gefangen. Diese ist nicht zuletzt schuld an Robins Lebensweg, hat sie doch am Königshof aus enttäuschter Liebe solange gegen ihn intrigiert, bis er diesen verlassen musste und zum Räuber wurde. Emily darf zu ihrem Mann zurück, wenn dieser Frieden schließt. Doch der hinterhältige Gegenspieler bricht sein Wort und hat nur ein Ziel: seinem verhaßten Gegner den Gar auszumachen. Unterdessen verschafft Robin Hood den Armen und Ausgebeuteten abseits des Gesetzes zu Recht und Gerechtigkeit…
Helmut Käutner, Deutschlands bedeutendster Nachkriegsregisseur, hatte nie Berührungsängste mit dem Fernsehen. Im Gegenteil, er erkannte seine Chancen und stellte mit diesem außergewöhnlichen Musical eine unterhaltsame Parodie auf die Beine, die geschickt Geschichte und Legende mit Gegenwärtigem verwebt. Durch die Handlung führt ein junger Mann von heute und kommentiert mit witzigen Sprüchen das Geschehen. Selbst die mittelalterlichen Räuber sorgen sich in ironisierender Weise um das Betriebsklima innerhalb der Bande. Eine Parodie, die niemals überzogen wirkt, aber dank der vorzüglichen Regie flott und modern die Geschichte rund um den britischen Volkshelden erzählt. Die Musik fügt sich vorzüglich in das stimmige Puzzle, das durch eine vorzügliche Besetzung abgerundet wird. Neben Hans von Borsody agieren nämlich Alwy Becker, Benno Hoffmann, Ingrid van Bergen und Günter Strack. Die Bild- und Farbgestaltung erinnert an die Farbenpracht teurer Hollywoodproduktionen.

Helmut Käutner, Germany's most important post-war director, never had any reservations about television. On the contrary, he recognized his opportunities and created an entertaining parody with this extraordinary musical, which skilfully interweaves history and legend with the present. A young man of today leads through the plot and comments on the events with witty sayings. Even the medieval robbers are ironically concerned about the working atmosphere within the gang. A parody that never seems exaggerated, but thanks to the excellent direction tells the story of the British folk hero in a brisk and modern way. The music fits excellently into the coherent puzzle, which is rounded off by an excellent cast. In addition to Hans von Borsody, Alwy Becker, Benno Hoffmann, Ingrid van Bergen and Günter Strack act. The image and color design is reminiscent of the blaze of color of expensive Hollywood productions.
