The two-part documentary 'German Hanseatic League - The Superpower of the Middle Ages' tells the story of how in the 12th century, a loose association of Low German merchants gave rise to a hitherto unimagined economic power that decisively determined and steered the economic and political fate of Europe for over three centuries. The Hanseatic League's trade network extended beyond the borders of Europe and allowed the world to grow together a little - at least on the commodity table. The Hanseatic League not only contributed to Europeanisation, but was also a first step towards globalisation. In its heyday, the Hanseatic League became a catalyst for restructuring and reconstruction, it successfully waged wars against competitors, fended off buccaneers such as Klaus Störtebeker and at times even held the English crown as a debt pledge.
