Belize, das ehemalige Britisch-Honduras, ist klein, hat aber von allem etwas: Karibik, Dschungel und Menschen ganz verschiedener Herkunft. Herz und Seele des Landes ist Belize City. Hier beginnen wir unsere Reise. Wir besuchen die berühmte Swing Bridge im Zentrum von Downtown. Sie verbindet den Norden mit dem Süden der Stadt und wird noch von Hand geöffnet und geschlossen. Sie ist die einzige ihrer Art in der Welt.
Auf dem Weg in den Westen des Landes passieren wir Lamanai, die berühmteste und älteste Maya-Stätte. Heute können wir in Lamanai Zeuge sein, wie die Nachfahren dieser alten Hochkultur den Tempel ihrer Vorfahren wieder aufbauen und rekonstruieren. Seit dreißig Jahren wird in Belize ein Maya-Tempel nach dem anderen ausgegraben. Mittlerweile ist klar: Belize war eine Hochburg der Mayakultur. Es gibt mehr Bauwerke der Maya als moderne Gebäude.
Wie eine Zeitreise in die Vergangenheit mutet unser Besuch bei den Mennoniten an. Diese holländisch-deutschstämmige Religionsgemeinschaft hat nach einer dreihundertjährigen Odyssee in Belize eine neue Heimat gefunden. Ihre Häuser in Shipyard sehen aus wie in einem Bilderbuch als längst vergangener Zeit. Uns gelingt es behutsam, mit einer ihrer konservativsten Gemeinden ins Gespräch zu kommen.
Am Karibischen Meer angekommen lernen wir die Fischerdörfer der Garifunda kennen. Sie sind die Nachfahren der schwarzen Sklaven, die einst von Afrika herüberkamen und heute in kleinen, farbenfrohen Hütten am Strand der Karibik leben.

Belize, the former British Honduras, is small, but has a bit of everything: the Caribbean, the jungle and people of very different origins. The heart and soul of the country is Belize City. This is where we start our journey. We will visit the famous Swing Bridge in the center of Downtown. It connects the north with the south of the city and is still opened and closed by hand. It is the only one of its kind in the world.
On the way to the west of the country, we pass Lamanai, the most famous and oldest Mayan site. Today in Lamanai we can witness how the descendants of this ancient high culture rebuild and reconstruct the temple of their ancestors. For thirty years, one Mayan temple after another has been excavated in Belize. It is now clear that Belize was a stronghold of Mayan culture. There are more Mayan buildings than modern buildings.
Our visit to the Mennonites seems like a journey back in time. This Dutch-German religious community has found a new home in Belize after a three-hundred-year odyssey. Their houses in Shipyard look like something out of a picture book, as if they were a bygone era. We carefully succeed in entering into dialogue with one of their most conservative communities.
Arriving at the Caribbean Sea, we get to know the fishing villages of the Garifanda. They are the descendants of the black slaves who once came over from Africa and now live in small, colorful huts on the beach of the Caribbean.
