Dieser Film will den Reisenden vor allem auf das unbekannte Bulgarien neugierig machen und Sehnsüchte wecken, das Land zwischen Donau und Rhodopen auf eigene Faust zu erkunden.
Seit grauer Vorzeit ist Bulgarien das Objekt der Begierde zahlloser Eroberer: Griechen, Römer, Byzantiner, Serben und schließlich osmanische Türken. Sie alle haben tiefe Spuren in Bulgarien hinterlassen,: Steinerne Zeugen einstiger Größe, den Kult und Wein und Küche, vor allem aber gastfreundliche, unkomplizierte und gütige Menschen, die über Jahrhunderte bei den fremden Herren das Gute abkupferten und das weniger Gute beiseite ließen.
Einige lernen wir näher kennen: Den Holzschnitzer Christo, der uns auf die Materialsuche in Gebirgslandschaften von fast unwirklicher Schönheit mitnimmt, oder Christo, der Historiker, der uns auf dem Gang durch die alte Hauptstadt Tyrnovo begleitet. Die Archäologin Pavlina, die eine Festung von Kaiser Trajan ausgräbt, und Danail, der Heger im Nationalpark um den Ropotamo-Fluss, eine verwunschene Märchenwelt mit schon halb im Sumpf versunkenen Regenwäldern.
Weitere Highlights sind das romantische Küstenstädtchen Sosopol und Melnik, wo die weiße Sonne des Südens den Rotwein so dick macht, dass er im Mittelalter in Säcken transportiert werden konnte.

This film aims to arouse the traveller's curiosity about the unknown Bulgaria and to awaken longings to explore the country between the Danube and the Rhodope Mountains on their own.
Since ancient times, Bulgaria has been the object of desire of countless conquerors: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Serbs and finally Ottoman Turks. They have all left deep traces in Bulgaria: stone witnesses of former greatness, the cult and wine and cuisine, but above all hospitable, uncomplicated and kind people who for centuries copied the good from the foreign masters and left the less good aside.
We get to know some of them better: the woodcarver Christo, who takes us on a search for materials in mountain landscapes of almost unreal beauty, or Christo, the historian, who accompanies us on a walk through the old capital Tyrnovo. The archaeologist Pavlina, who is excavating a fortress of Emperor Trajan, and Danail, the keeper in the national park around the Ropotamo River, an enchanted fairytale world with rainforests already half submerged in the swamp.
Other highlights are the romantic coastal towns of Sozopol and Melnik, where the white sun of the south makes the red wine so thick that it could be transported in bags in the Middle Ages.
