'Der Wunderweltenbaum' erzählt die Geschichte von Polly (Claire Foy), Tim (Andrew Garfield) und ihren drei Kindern, einer modernen Familie, die gezwungen ist, in die abgelegene englische Landschaft zu ziehen. Während sie sich an ihr neues Leben gewöhnen, entdecken die Kinder einen magischen Baum und seine außergewöhnlichen und exzentrischen Bewohner, darunter die liebenswerten Charaktere Mondgesicht (Nonso Anozie), Silky (Nicola Coughlan), Dame Waschbär (Jessica Gunning) und Topfmann (Dustin Demri-Burns). Schnell schließen sie Freundschaft mit den Baumbewohnern Fee Seidenhaar (Nicola Coughlan), Frau Wasch (Jessica Gunning) und Mondgesicht (Nonso Anozie), die sie in fantastische Welten entführen. Gemeinsam erleben sie märchenhafte Abenteuer – bis sie auf einer ihrer Reisen ausgerechnet in der düsteren Welt der gefürchteten Schuldirektorin Madame Klaps (Rebecca Ferguson) notlanden müssen. Auch zuhause läuft es mit dem neuen Familienbetrieb plötzlich nicht mehr ganz nach Plan.
