Auf der Flucht vor ihren zahlreichen Verehrern kehrt Gräfin Mariza (Christine Görner) Budapest den Rücken und besucht nach langer Zeit ihr Stammgut. Hier hat der neue Verwalter Michael (Rudolf Schock) das Heft in die Hand genommen, der den Besitz wieder in Schwung bringen will. Als auch noch Gutsnachbar Dragomir (Kurt Großkurth) der Gräfin einen Heiratsantrag macht, hat sie endgültig genug und lässt das Gerücht verbreiten, sie habe sich mit einem gewissen Koloman Zupan (Gunther Philipp) verlobt. Sie glaubt, diesen Namen gäbe es nur in der Operette 'Der Zigeunerbaron'. Tatsächlich aber ist Koloman Zupan ein Schnorrerkönig in Wien, der als Verlobter der Gräfin bald einige Verwirrung stiftet. Und auch der neue Verwalter bringt die Gefühlslage der schönen Mariza gehörig durcheinander...

Fleeing from her numerous admirers, Countess Mariza (Christine Görner) turns her back on Budapest and visits her ancestral estate after a long time. Here the new administrator Michael (Rudolf Schock) has taken the reins, who wants to get the property going again. When neighbor Dragomir (Kurt Großkurth) also proposes to the countess, she has finally had enough and spreads the rumor that she has become engaged to a certain Koloman Zupan (Gunther Philipp). She believes that this name only exists in the operetta 'The Gypsy Baron'. In fact, however, Koloman Zupan is a scrounger king in Vienna, who soon causes some confusion as the Countess's fiancé.
