Während ihr Mann Tony seinem Job als Pilot nachgeht, tötet seine Frau Mélancolie Mau (Marlène Jobert) in Notwehr einen Einbrecher, der sie vergewaltigt hat. Anstatt die Polizei zu verständigen, wirft sie die Leiche aus Scham ins Meer. Kurz darauf steht der amerikanische Geheimagent Harry Dobbs (Charles Bronson) vor ihrer Tür, der seinerseits den Gangster verfolgte. Instinktiv ahnt er, dass hier etwas vorgefallen sein muss. Mellie schweigt jedoch eisern und zieht sich immer mehr in sich zurück. Selbst ihrem Mann sagt sie nichts. Als Mellie wieder allein ist, greift Dobbs in die Trickkiste. Er konfrontiert Mellie damit, dass in der Nähe eine Leiche angeschwemmt wurde und eine junge Frau als Mörderin beschuldigt wird. Er überzeugt sie, dass eine unschuldige Frau für ihr Verbrechen büßen muss und löst dadurch beinahe eine neue Katastrophe aus.

Instead of calling the police, she throws the body into the sea out of shame. Shortly afterwards, the American secret agent Harry Dobbs (Charles Bronson) shows up at her door, who in turn pursues the gangster. Instinctively, he suspects that something must have happened here. Mellie, however, remains adamantly silent and withdraws more and more into herself. She doesn't even say anything to her husband. When Mellie is alone again, Dobbs reaches into her bag of tricks. He confronts Mellie with the fact that a corpse has washed up nearby and that a young woman is accused of being the murderer. He convinces her that an innocent woman has to pay for her crime and almost triggers a new catastrophe.
