Als die junge Künstlerin Tove Jansson 1945 in Helsinki die 'Mumins' erfindet, steckt sie gerade mitten in einer Sinnkrise. Tove (Alma Pöysti) führt eine offene Beziehung mit dem linken Politiker Atos Wirtanen (Shanti Roney) und ist wild verliebt in die aufregende Theaterregisseurin Vivica Bandler (Krista Kosonen). Toves Vater, ein renommierter Bildhauer, blickt verächtlich auf ihre Arbeit. Und auch sie selbst würde lieber mit moderner Kunst reüssieren. Doch ausgerechnet ihre nebenbei gezeichneten Geschichten von den Trollwesen mit den Knollnasen werden von einer Zeitung in Serie gedruckt und machen Tove in kurzer Zeit reich und berühmt. Doch ist das schon die Freiheit, nach der sie sich immer gesehnt hat?
In ihrem Biopic 'Tove' (2020) erzählt Regisseurin Zaida Bergroth vom aufregenden Leben der wohl bekanntesten Autorin und Zeichnerin Finnlands, deren bahnbrechendes Werk bereits Generationen von Kindern und Erwachsenen verzaubert hat. Berühmt geworden ist Tove Jansson (1914-2001) mit den 'Mumin' Büchern und Comics, die weltweit in mehr als 40 Sprachen übersetzt wurden. Doch sie schrieb auch Romane für Erwachsene, war politische Illustratorin und Karikaturistin, malte und schuf Skulpturen. Eine komplexe Künstlerin und kreative Pionierin, die ein aufregendes Boheme-Leben zwischen Helsinki, Stockholm und Paris führte, überzeugte Pazifistin war und ganz selbstverständlich mit den Geschlechterrollen ihrer Zeit brach. 'Tove' war in den finnischen Kinos ein riesiger Publikumshit, wurde von Finnland ins Oscar-Rennen geschickt und beim Finnischen Filmpreis 'Jussi' in sieben Kategorien ausgezeichnet, u.a. als bester Film sowie für die beste Regie und die beste Hauptdarstellerin. Ein Film über die Suche nach Identität, Liebe und Freiheit, der vom mythischen Geist der 'Mumins' und ihrer fabelhaften Abenteuerwelt durchweht wird.

But of all things, her incidentally drawn stories of the troll creatures with the bulbous noses are printed in series by a newspaper and make Tove rich and famous in a short time.
