An einem verschneiten Thanksgiving-Tag begegnen sich Robert (James Garner) und Catherine (Julie Andrews) in einem Pflegeheim. Kinderkardiologin Dr. Catherine Howard sitzt im Sterbezimmer ihres Mannes. Bauingenieur Robert Woodward ist mit seinen Töchtern Jaclyn (Stacy Grant) und Lori (Patricia Charbonneau) und Enkel Michael (Daniel Magder) gekommen, um seine Frau Marybeth (Sheena Larkin) zum Truthahn Essen nach Hause zu holen. Aber Marybeth, nach drei Herzinfarkten ein Pflegefall, hat einen schlechten Tag. Sie erkennt ihre Familie nicht und regt sich so auf, dass sie im Bett bleiben muss. Während Lori und Jaclyn zurückfahren, um das Essen vorzubereiten, bleibt Robert noch bei seiner Frau. Als er aufbrechen will, sind die Straßen vollkommen zugeschneit, Robert bekommt kein Taxi. Spontan bietet Catherine an, ihn mitzunehmen was sie sofort bereut: Robert entpuppt sich als arroganter Macho, dem es offenbar Freude bereitet, stets das Falsche zu sagen.

On a snowy Thanksgiving day, Robert (James Garner) and Catherine (Julie Andrews) meet in a nursing home. Pediatric cardiologist Dr. Catherine Howard sits in her husband's death room. Civil engineer Robert Woodward has come home with his daughters Jaclyn (Stacy Grant) and Lori (Patricia Charbonneau) and grandson Michael (Daniel Magder) to bring his wife Marybeth (Sheena Larkin) home for turkey dinner. But Marybeth, a nursing case after three heart attacks, is having a bad day. She does not recognize her family and is so upset that she has to stay in bed. While Lori and Jaclyn drive back to prepare the meal, Robert stays with his wife. When he wants to leave, the streets are completely snowed in, Robert can't get a taxi. Catherine spontaneously offers to take him with her, which she immediately regrets: Robert turns out to be an arrogant macho who apparently enjoys always saying the wrong thing.
