Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) leidet noch immer sehr unter dem Tod ihres Mannes und betäubt ihren Schmerz mit Drogen. Mit der Polizei dicht auf den Fersen, sucht er Zuflucht in Ashleys Wohnung und nimmt die junge Frau in ihren eigenen vier Wänden als Geisel. Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) is still suffering greatly from the death of her husband and numbs her pain with drugs. But because she has already lost custody of her little daughter Paige (Elle Graham) because of this, she finally tries to get her life back on track with the help of a self-help group. At the same time, criminal Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) escapes from the city courthouse, killing a judge and a police officer. With the police hot on his heels, he seeks refuge in Ashley's apartment and takes the young woman hostage in her own home. The situation seems hopeless, but when Ashley starts reading to Brian from a book that was recommended to her in her support group, the two gradually develop a deeper understanding of each other...
