Niels Deboos (Aljoscha Stadelmann) hat die Schnauze voll. Eurobonds, Bankenrettung, Staatsbankrott, Korruption und Kapitalismus - das ganze Elend geht Niels gehörig gegen den Strich. Er beschließt, der Bundesrepublik Deutschland den Rücken zu kehren. Allerdings ohne das Land zu verlassen. Vom Untergangspropheten Christian Darré (Matthias Bundschuh) unterstützt, gelingt es ihm, seinen zunächst verrückt anmutenden Plan in die Tat umzusetzen. Mit einer Handvoll Verbündeter gründet er vor den Toren Berlins einen eigenen Staat. Mit eigenen Ministern, eigenem Radio und fragwürdigen Ideen zur Bekämpfung des demographischen Wandels. Die sich selbstverwaltende Kommune bleibt nicht lange unbemerkt. Neben Druck und Ärger von außen brodelt es allerdings auch in den eigenen Reihen. Der Showdown bringt Krawall - und einen überraschenden Durchbruch...
Moritz Laubes 'Freiland', ein Film zur Lage der Nation, der die aktuellen Themen von Politik- und Feuilleton-Ressorts zu Politikverdruss und dem lauten Ruf nach Volksbegehren treffsicher und zugespitzt aufgreift. Ohne Drehbuch und mit Ausnahme der Monologe hundertprozentig improvisiert, gelingt es dem Regisseur, seine Darsteller gekonnt und pointiert durch aberwitzige Stationen der Rebellion und Konstitution zu treiben. Moritz Laube's 'Freiland', a film on the state of the nation, which takes up the current topics of political and feuilleton departments on political frustration and the loud call for referendums in an accurate and pointed way. Without a script and, with the exception of the monologues, one hundred percent improvised, the director succeeds in driving his actors skilfully and pointedly through ludicrous stages of rebellion and constitution.
