Seine zweite Amerikareise führte Christoph Kolumbus 1493 zurück zu der ein Jahr zuvor von ihm entdeckten Insel 'Hispaniola'. Kolumbus, der an Bord seiner Flotte etwa 1.500 neue Siedler mitgebracht hatte, suchte nach einem neuen Standort für die geplante Handelsniederlassung. In einer Bucht im Norden Hispaniolas wurde er fündig und gründete im Januar 1494 die erste planmäßig angelegte Siedlung auf amerikanischem Boden: 'La Isabela'. Doch der neuen Kolonie war wenig Glück beschieden. 1495 verwüstete ein Hurrikan die Insel und versenkte zahlreiche Schiffe, die vor 'La Isabela' ankerten. Zudem war die Versorgungslage schwierig, die Siedler blieben vom Wohlwollen der Taínos und von Importen aus dem spanischen Mutterland abhängig. Als dann auch noch die von den Spaniern erhofften Goldfunde ausblieben, war das Schicksal der neuen Kolonie besiegelt. Schon 1497 wurde sie vollständig verlassen, die Spanier zogen in die Siedlung 'Santo Domingo' im Süden der Insel um, wo das ersehnte Gold gefunden worden war. Diese Dokumentation begleitet eine Gruppe von Archäologen, die die Überreste der Ortschaft ausgraben und dabei zahlreiche aufschlussreiche Entdeckungen machen, von Kolumbus' einstigem Wohnhaus bis zum Friedhof, wo 49 Skelette früher Siedler gefunden wurden.

In 1493, Christopher Columbus' second trip to America took him back to the island of 'Hispaniola', which he had discovered a year earlier. Columbus, who had brought about 1,500 new settlers aboard his fleet, was looking for a new location for the planned trading post. He found what he was looking for in a bay in northern Hispaniola and founded the first planned settlement on American soil in January 1494: 'La Isabela'. But the new colony was not very lucky. In 1495, a hurricane devastated the island and sank numerous ships anchored off 'La Isabela'. In addition, the supply situation was difficult, the settlers remained dependent on the goodwill of the Taínos and on imports from the Spanish mainland. When the gold discoveries hoped for by the Spaniards failed to materialize, the fate of the new colony was sealed. As early as 1497, it was completely abandoned, the Spaniards moved to the settlement of 'Santo Domingo' in the south of the island, where the longed-for gold had been found. This documentary follows a group of archaeologists who excavate the remains of the village and make numerous revealing discoveries, from Columbus' former home to the cemetery where 49 skeletons of early settlers were found.
