Hatifa (Gisela Büttner) ist ihr schweres Schicksal leid und entflieht dem Ort ihrer Versklavung, einem Steinbruch. In der Wüste irrt sie zwar in Freiheit, letztlich aber hilflos, ohne Wasser und Nahrung umher. Kurz vor dem Verdursten wird sie vom Weisen Simsal (Harry Hindemith) gerettet, der mit einer Karawane des Kaufmanns Ganem (Jochen Thomas) reist. Schnell gewinnt Hatifa viele Freunde, so auch den jungen Knecht Hodja (Axel Kausmann). Nur ihm vertraut sie ihr Geheimnis an. Denn, dass sie eine Sklavin ist, musste das Mädchen für sich behalten. Schließlich droht jedem, der entflohenen Sklaven hilft, erbarmungslos die Todesstrafe. Aus Rücksicht vor der Karawane fliehen beide, werden aber bald vom Krieger Ganem aufgegriffen. Ganem stellt rasch fest, dass er mit Hatifa viel Geld verdienen kann und verkauft sie wieder an einen Steinbruch. Mit einem Sklavenschiff soll sie nun in ein fernes Land gebracht werden. Doch dazu kommt es nicht. Mit Hilfe des eingeschleusten Hodja kann der Seeräuber Zadok (Fred Düren), selbst ein entlaufener Sklave, das Schiff überfallen und alle Gepeinigten befreien. Plötzlich erkennt Zadok in Hatifa seine verschollene Tochter.

Hatifa (Gisela Büttner) is tired of her difficult fate and escapes the place of her enslavement, a quarry. In the desert, it wanders in freedom, but ultimately helplessly, without water and food. Shortly before dying of thirst, she is saved by the sage Simsal (Harry Hindemith), who travels with a caravan of the merchant Ganem (Jochen Thomas). Hatifa quickly wins many friends, including the young farmhand Hodja (Axel Kausmann). She confides her secret to him alone. Because the girl had to keep the fact that she is a slave to herself. After all, anyone who helps escaped slaves is mercilessly threatened with the death penalty. Out of consideration for the caravan, both flee, but are soon picked up by the warrior Ganem. Ganem quickly realizes that he can earn a lot of money with Hatifa and sells her back to a quarry. She is now to be taken to a distant land on a slave ship. But it doesn't come to that. With the help of the infiltrated Hodja, the buccaneer Zadok (Fred Düren), himself a runaway slave, is able to attack the ship and free all the tormented. Suddenly, Zadok recognizes Hatifa as his missing daughter.
