Fast hätte Polizei-Chef Edsel (Peter Boyle), dessen ganzer Ehrgeiz darin besteht, die 55-Meilen-Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung peinlich genau einzuhalten und Raser zu verknacken, den 'Cannonballern' einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Am Abend vor dem Start lässt er das gesamte Fahrerlager verhaften. Dann fahren eben die Amateure die superteuren PS-Boliden: Charlie (John Candy), der korpulente Parkwächter, die beiden gerissenen, attraktiven Elektronik-Freaks Margaret (Shari Belafonte) und Lea (Melody Anderson), nicht zu vergessen Alec (Matt Frewer), der buchstäblich um sein Leben fährt. Im Kampf gegen die Konkurrenz und Polizei ist jedes Mittel recht. Kein Trick kann mies, keine Finte hinterhältig genug sein. Start frei zum dritten 'Cannonball Run', dem Rennen, bei dem harte Männer, schöne Frauen, scharfe Kurven und spektakuläre Stunts inbegriffen sind und selbst Boxchamp Michael Spinks als Bachelor zwei blaue Augen riskiert.

Police chief Edsel (Peter Boyle), whose whole ambition is to scrupulously adhere to the 55-mile speed limit and to crack speeders, almost threw a spanner in the works for the 'Cannonballers'. On the evening before the start, he has the entire paddock arrested. Then it's the amateurs who drive the super-expensive horsepower cars: Charlie (John Candy), the corpulent parking attendant, the two cunning, attractive electronics freaks Margaret (Shari Belafonte) and Lea (Melody Anderson), not to mention Alec (Matt Frewer), who is literally racing for his life. In the fight against competition and police, any means is justified. No trick can be lousy, no feint too sneaky. The start is clear for the third 'Cannonball Run', the race in which tough men, beautiful women, sharp curves and spectacular stunts are included and even boxing champ Michael Spinks risks two black eyes as a bachelor.
