Links um, rechts um, vorwärts marsch! 34 Jahre lang dröhnten die zackigen Kommandos und Befehle über die Kasernenhöfe und Übungsgelände der DDR. Insgesamt 2,5 Millionen junge Männer haben den grauen Waffenrock der NVA seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1956 bis zu ihrem letzten Zapfenstreich am 3. Oktober 1990 überstreifen müssen. Die Geschichte der NVA, erzählt aus der Perspektive der Rekruten, rückt Dimensionen und Aspekte des Soldaten-Daseins ins Blickfeld, die all zu oft übersehen werden, den Alltag der Armee vor dem Hintergrund historischer Ereignisse und Zäsuren.
Teil 1 Fahneneid und Eisenschweine: Im ersten Teil der neuen MDR-Dokumentation rekonstruiert der Autor Thomas Kuschel zunächst die Aufbau-Jahre der Nationalen Volksarmee, die Umstände und Hintergründe der Formierung der NVA. Verfolgt wird der Weg der NVA bis zum Ende der 60er Jahre, in denen sich Ulbrichts ehrgeizige Truppe zu einer vollwertigen Koalitionsarmee des Warschauer Paktes entwickelte.
Teil 2 Bis zum letzten Zapfenstreich: Im zweiten Teil betrachtet MDR-Autor Michael Erler die Zeitspanne von Anfang der 70er Jahre bis zu ihrem letzten Zapfenstreich 1990. Anfang der 70er Jahre war die NVA zu einer relativ schlagkräftigen, modernen Armee im Rahmen der östlichen Militärkoalition herangewachsen und avancierte unter Honecker zu einer Art Musterschüler der Sowjet-Armee. Im Herbst 1989 war es damit dann plötzlich vorbei. Die Ereignisse überschlugen sich. Einigen NVA-Truppenteilen drohte nun sogar der Einsatz gegen Demonstranten in Leipzig. Es kommt zu Streiks und Befehlsverweigerungen. Kurze Zeit später hört die DDR auf zu bestehen, mit ihr auch die NVA.

Turn left, turn right, march forward! For 34 years, the jagged commands and orders roared over the barracks yards and training grounds of the GDR. A total of 2.5 million young men had to put on the gray tunic of the NVA from its founding in 1956 until its last coup on October 3, 1990. The history of the NVA, told from the perspective of the recruits, focuses on dimensions and aspects of soldiers' lives that are all too often overlooked, the everyday life of the army against the backdrop of historical events and caesuras.
Part 1 Oath of allegiance and iron pigs: In the first part of the new MDR documentary, author Thomas Kuschel first reconstructs the years of development of the National People's Army, the circumstances and background of the formation of the NVA. The path of the NVA is followed until the end of the 1960s, when Ulbricht's ambitious troops developed into a full-fledged coalition army of the Warsaw Pact.
Part 2 Until the last tap: In the second part, MDR author Michael Erler looks at the period from the beginning of the 70s to their last taps in 1990. At the beginning of the 1970s, the NVA had grown into a relatively powerful, modern army within the framework of the Eastern Military Coalition and, under Honecker, advanced to become a kind of model pupil of the Soviet army. In the fall of 1989, it was suddenly over. Events came thick and fast. Some NVA troops were now even threatened with deployment against demonstrators in Leipzig. There are strikes and refusal to obey orders. A short time later, the GDR ceased to exist, and with it the NVA.
