In the cinema documentary 'Kommunist' (2026), director Lutz Pehnert (see also his documentaries 'Bettina' from 2022 about Bettina Wegner and 'Scherbenland' about the band 'Ton Steine Scherben') traces the rise and fall of the man and sheds light on his political decisions in the context of the Cold War. At the same time, the film looks at the decline of the GDR and the paths of the people who grew up in this system with a new perspective.
