Der Dokumentarfilm 'National Bird' begleitet Menschen, die entschlossen sind, das Schweigen über eine der umstrittensten militärischen Maßnahmen der jüngeren Zeit zu brechen: den geheimen Drohnenkrieg der USA. Im Zentrum des Films stehen drei Kriegsveteranen der US-Air-Force, die in unterschiedlichen Funktionen selbst an diesem Krieg beteiligt waren. Ihre Mitschuld an der Tötung Unbekannter - und möglicherweise Unschuldiger - auf weit entfernten Kriegsschauplätzen lässt sie nicht zur Ruhe kommen. Schließlich gehen sie an die Öffentlichkeit, ohne Rücksicht auf mögliche Konsequenzen. Im Verlauf des Films nehmen ihre Geschichten dramatische Wendungen, so fährt eine der Protagonistinnen selbst nach Afghanistan, wo sie mit einem grauenhaften Vorfall und dessen Opfern konfrontiert wird. Doch ihre Reise bietet auch Anlass für Frieden und Versöhnung...
'National Bird' (2016) liefert authentische und sehr persönliche Einblicke in Anwendung und Folgen des amerikanischen Drohnenprogramms, aus Sicht der beteiligten Kriegsveteranen ebenso wie aus Sicht der Opfer. Ihre Erfahrungen und Schicksale werden hier zum ersten Mal in einem großen Dokumentarfilm zusammengeführt, der den Zuschauer zwingt, sich einer mitleidlosen Form moderner Kriegsführung zu stellen. Große Unterstützung bekam die Regisseurin Sonia Kennebeck für ihr Projekt von den beiden berühmten Regisseuren Errol Morris und Wim Wenders. Die Weltpremiere erlebte 'National Bird' bei den 66. Internationalen Filmfestspielen 2016 in Berlin.

The documentary 'National Bird' follows people who are determined to break the silence on one of the most controversial military measures in recent times: the secret drone war of the USA. At the center of the film are three war veterans of the US Air Force, who were themselves involved in this war in various functions. Her complicity in the killing of unknown people - and possibly innocent people - in far-flung theaters of war does not allow her to rest. Finally, they go public, regardless of possible consequences. In the course of the film, their stories take dramatic turns, for example one of the protagonists herself travels to Afghanistan, where she is confronted with a gruesome incident and its victims. But their journey also offers an occasion for peace and reconciliation...
'National Bird' (2016) provides authentic and very personal insights into the application and consequences of the American drone program, from the perspective of the war veterans involved as well as from the perspective of the victims. Their experiences and fates are brought together here for the first time in a major documentary that forces the viewer to face a merciless form of modern warfare. The director Sonia Kennebeck received great support for her project from the two famous directors Errol Morris and Wim Wenders. 'National Bird' had its world premiere at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival in 2016.
