Mit 'Elephants Dream' wurde der erste europäische HD-DVD-Titel jenseits der USA und Japan im September 2006 veröffentlicht. Ziel war es, bereits mit dieser frühen Veröffentlichung ein Referenzprodukt zu schaffen, das eine Vielzahl der Möglichkeiten des neuen Formats eindrucksvoll demonstriert. Der Ehrgeiz des Filmproduktionsteams rund um Ton Roosendaal, das es geschafft hat mit begrenzten finanziellen Mitteln einen Animationsfilm auf hohem Niveau zu produzieren, hat sich auf die Entwickler der HD-DVD übertragen. Bereichert wurde das erstklassige, in voller High-Definition-Auflösung (1080p) gespeicherte Video der 'Elephants Dream' HD-DVD um zahlreiche Bonusinhalte. Neben mehreren Audiokommentaren, Untertiteln und Making Ofs ist auch ein 'Script to Scene' Featurette enthalten. Highlights der Disc sind aber neben einem 'Picture in Picture' Making Of, welches synchron zum Film abläuft und frei auf dem Bildschirm positioniert werden kann, die unterschiedlichen Encodingvarianten. Der Hauptfilm ist z.B. als VC-1 und MPEG-2 Video auf der Disc enthalten. Damit ist es möglich, die Qualität der beiden Formate zu vergleichen. Der computergenerierte Kurzfilm, der hauptsächlich mit freier Software erstellt wurde, sorgte weltweit für großes Interesse und erfreut sich einer ständig wachsenden Fangemeinde.

With 'Elephants Dream', the first European HD-DVD title outside the USA and Japan was released in September 2006. The aim was to create a reference product with this early release, which impressively demonstrates a variety of the possibilities of the new format. The ambition of the film production team around Ton Roosendaal, who managed to produce an animated film at a high level with limited financial resources, has been transferred to the developers of the HD-DVD. The first-class video of the 'Elephants Dream' HD-DVD, stored in full high-definition resolution (1080p), has been enriched with numerous bonus content. In addition to several audio commentaries, subtitles and making ofs, a 'Script to Scene' featurette is also included. However, the highlights of the disc are a 'Picture in Picture' Making Of, which runs synchronously with the film and can be freely positioned on the screen, as well as the different encoding variants. The main film is e.g. included as VC-1 and MPEG-2 video on the disc. This makes it possible to compare the quality of the two formats. The computer-generated short film, which was mainly created with free software, generated a lot of interest worldwide and enjoys an ever-growing fan base.
