Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) ist ausgebildeter Allgemeinmediziner aus New York und muss, weil sein Studium vom Staat Alaska finanziert wurde, seine Pflichtzeit in Alaska ableisten. Leider wird er nicht in die Hauptstadt sondern nach Cicely, ein Dorf an der alaskanischen Riviera versetzt. Joel ist nach dem ersten Besuch bei seinem neuen Arbeitgeber und einer kurzen Besichtigung seiner Praxis vollkommen davon überzeugt, dass er dort keinen Tag länger bleiben wird. Doch es kommt natürlich anders: Dr. Fleischman sitzt im Cicely-Nest fest und muss sich nicht nur mit Medizin sondern auch mit den merkwürdigen Bewohnern der kleinen Gemeinde befassen - wie Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), einem jungen indianischen Filmfreak und Gelegenheitsarbeiter, Maurice Minnifield (Barry Corbin), der einst Astronaut war und davon träumt, aus Cicely eine blühende Stadt zu machen, Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), der die einzige Kneipe 'The Brick' leitet. Außerdem lernt Joel auch Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) kennen, sie ist Pilotin eines Postflugzeuges und Bürgermeisterin von Cicely. Nicht zu vergessen wäre noch Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles), eine Indianerin, die sich nicht davon abbringen lassen will, Joels Arzthelferin zu werden...

Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) is a trained general practitioner from New York and has to serve his mandatory time in Alaska because his studies were funded by the state of Alaska. Unfortunately, he is not transferred to the capital but to Cicely, a village on the Alaskan Riviera. After the first visit to his new employer and a short tour of his practice, Joel is completely convinced that he will not stay there a day longer. But of course things turn out differently: Dr. Fleischman is stuck in the Cicely nest and has to deal not only with medicine but also with the strange inhabitants of the small community - such as Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), a young Indian film freak and casual worker, Maurice Minnifield (Barry Corbin), who was once an astronaut and dreams of making Cicely a flourishing city, Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), who runs the only pub 'The Brick'. Joel also meets Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner), a pilot of a mail plane and mayor of Cicely. Not to be forgotten is Marilyn Whirlwind (Elaine Miles), a Native American woman who doesn't want to be dissuaded from becoming Joel's doctor's assistant...
