Die Karriere des von sich selbst überzeugten Kriminalisten ist schon lange ins Stocken geraten - kein Wunder, ist er doch wahrlich nicht der Klügste. Mit seiner unbeholfenen und trotteligen Art sorgt er regelmäßig für Katastrophen und macht seinem Chef Maurice Lefranc (Gérard Depardieu) das Leben schwer. Da aber gerade Urlaubszeit ist, bleibt nur Boulin für einen Sondereinsatz in 'Saint-Tropez'. Der einflussreiche Unternehmer Baron Claude Tranchant (Benoît Poelvoorde) hat den Minister persönlich um Hilfe gebeten, nachdem auf seiner prunkvollen Sommerresidenz ein Auto sabotiert wurde und Drohbriefe an seine Frau eingingen. Er wünscht sich den besten Ermittler von Paris zur Aufklärung des Falls. Als Butler getarnt, soll Boulin der Sache nun möglichst unauffällig auf den Grund gehen. Während sich auf dem herrschaftlichen Anwesen die Elite Frankreichs für das alljährliche Sommerfest einfindet, mischt sich Inspektor Boulin mit seinen eigenwilligen Ermittlungsmethoden unter die illustre Gesellschaft und sorgt dabei für jede Menge Chaos...

Produziert wurde 'Mystère à Saint-Tropez', so der französische Originaltitel, von Olivier Delbosc und Christian Clavier, das Drehbuch stammt ebenfalls von Clavier, gemeinsam mit Jean-François Halin und Jean-Marie Poiré.
