With 'Red Rocket' (2022), writer and indie director Sean Baker (see the film tips 'Starlet' 2012, 'Tangerine L.A.' 2015 and 'The Florida Project' from 2017) explores the world of pimps, drug dealers and adult film industry. The result is a weird comedy, sex film and milieu study in one. Baker's film, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, has made numerous other festival appearances and has already received much praise and numerous nominations. With films such as 'Tangerine L.A.', the story of a transgender sex worker shot on an iPhone, and 'The Florida Project', a film about an unemployed single mother and her young daughter who live in a run-down motel in the shadow of Walt Disney World, Baker has staged life on the fringes of society. His new work 'Red Rocket' is in no way inferior and shows a dark, funny and mercilessly honest portrait of the white underclass in the USA.
