Die gesamte Nation swingt und tanzt, aus allen Radios ertönen wohlvertraute Beats und in den Tanzcafés finden die begehrten Wettbewerbe statt. Alles, was Arme und Beine hat, eifert den großen Idolen nach. Junge, vielversprechende Bands und Dance-Combos sprießen plötzlich wie Unkraut aus dem Boden. Auf dem ganzen Kontinent bricht eine Begeisterungswelle aus, wie sie die Welt noch nicht gesehen hat. Inmitten dieses neuen Lebensgefühls stehen auch Susan (Renée Zellweger), Cookie (Patricia Childress) und Tony (Max Perlich). Getreu dem Motto 'Musik ist unser Leben' entsagen die drei Youngsters der Schule. Statt sich um eine solide Lebensgrundlage zu kümmern, verbringen sie all ihre Zeit mit ihrer Musikkarriere. Intrigen und Neid sind stete Begleiter auf dem felsigen Weg zum Ruhm. Sollten sie verlieren, wird ihnen dieses Spiel das Genick brechen.

The year 1950 is written and rock'n'roll is simply indispensable. The entire nation swings and dances, familiar beats sound from all the radios and the coveted competitions take place in the dance cafés. Everything that has arms and legs emulates the great idols. Young, promising bands and dance combos are suddenly sprouting up like weeds. A wave of enthusiasm breaks out across the continent, the likes of which the world has never seen before. In the midst of this new attitude to life are also Susan (Renée Zellweger), Cookie (Patricia Childress) and Tony (Max Perlich). True to the motto 'Music is our life', the three youngsters renounce the school. Instead of taking care of a solid livelihood, they spend all their time on their music careers. Intrigue and envy are constant companions on the rocky road to fame. If they lose, this game will break their necks.
