Er schifft nach Südkorea ein, um einen Auftragsmord auszuführen, damit er seine Schulden begleichen kann; gleichzeitig will er nach seiner vermissten Frau suchen. Er nimmt diesen Auftrag an, obwohl er kaum etwas über das Anschlagsziel weiß, und schon bald befindet er sich inmitten einer gefährlichen Verschwörung, als er teuflische Machenschaften aufdeckt, bei denen Betrug und Lügen an der Tagesordnung sind. Gu-nam wird schließlich für den Mord, den er selbst aber gar nicht begangen hat, nicht nur von der Polizei gesucht, sondern auch von den Männern, die für das Komplott verantwortlich sind – einem skrupellosen Mafiaboss (Cho Seong-ha) und einem hartnäckigen Killer (Kim Yun-soek). Als Gangster und Killer aufeinander treffen, bricht die Hölle los und alles gipfelt in einem Spiel, in dem man bald nicht mehr weiß, wer Jäger und wer Gejagter ist...
Zum Team des von Na Hong-jin inszenierten Films 'The Yellow Sea' gehören Kameramann Lee Sung-je, Produktionsdesigner Lee Hwo-kyoung, der Cutter Kim Sun-min, der Action-Choreograph Yoo Sang-seob, für die Musik zeichneten Jang Young-gyu und Lee Byung-hoon verantwortlich. Na Hong-jins Debütfilm 'The Chaser' (Südkorea 2008) konnte in seinem Heimatland über 5 Millionen Zuschauer begeistern und wird von Kritikern oft als Vorbote für eine neue Generation von koreanischen Thrillern betrachtet. Aufgrund seiner meisterhaften Inszenierung und seinem ausgeprägten Sinn für Details erhielt sein erster Film eine Reihe von Auszeichnungen, darunter bei den 'Grand Bell Awards' (dem koreanischen Pendant für den Oscar) den Preis für den besten Film und die beste Regie. Director Na's masterful staging is a fast-paced narrative with a groundbreaking blend of action, suspense and dramatic elements that further cements his reputation as an innovative director. On the Chinese side of the Sino-Russian-Korean border, there is a region called the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. The high number of Koreans living there has led to the Chinese government making Yanbian an independent administrative district. At the center of 'The Yellow Sea' is Gu-Nam (Ha Jung-woo), a taxi driver from this region. He embarks for South Korea to carry out a contract killing so that he can pay off his debts; at the same time, he wants to search for his missing wife. He accepts the assignment even though he knows little about the target, and soon finds himself in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy as he uncovers diabolical machinations involving deceit and lies. In the end, Gu-nam is not only wanted by the police for the murder, which he didn't commit himself, but also by the men who are responsible for the plot – an unscrupulous mafia boss (Cho Seong-ha) and a persistent killer (Kim Yun-soek). When gangsters and killers meet, all hell breaks loose and everything culminates in a game in which you soon no longer know who is the hunter and who is the hunted...

Na Hong-jin's debut film 'The Chaser' (South Korea 2008) attracted over 5 million viewers in its home country and is often considered by critics to be a harbinger of a new generation of Korean thrillers. Due to its masterful staging and keen sense of detail, his first film won a number of awards, including Best Picture and Best Director at the Grand Bell Awards. In addition, there were awards at the 'Paek Sang Awards', the 'Korea Film Awards' and the 'PiFAn Awards'. 'The Chaser' was also invited to the 61st Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the Midnight screening. The film rights were sold to the USA, Japan, France, Greece, the Benelux countries and Hong Kong. With such an impressive debut, the pressure on Na Hong-jin's next movie was correspondingly great.
