Detroit, 1958. Der gerade mal 17-jährige Otis Williams (Charles Malik Whitfield) träumt von einer Karriere als Musiker und gründet mit Melvin Franklin (D.B. Woodside) das Duo 'The Siberians'. Die Musiker kommen an, haben aber nur mäßigen Erfolg. Bis Produzentin Johnnie Mae Matthews (Vanessa Bell Calloway) auf sie aufmerksam wird und fortan managt. Zeitgleich versuchen auch Eddie Kendricks (Terron Brooks) und Paul Williams (Christian Payton) ihr Glück im Detroiter Musikgeschäft. Sie nennen sich 'The Primes' und haben den Vertrag mit Berry Gordy (Obba Babatundé), dem berühmtem Motown-Mogul, schon in der Tasche. Die Umstände führen dazu, dass die vier Vollblutmusiker schließlich die Gruppe 'The Temptations' gründen und zusammen mit dem fünften Bandmitglied ihren ersten gemeinsamen Hit 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' landen. Das Quintett tourt mit den anderen Motown-Stars wie Marvin Gaye (Ricky Fante), 'The Miracles' und 'The Supremes' durch die Lande. Und das ist erst der Anfang ihrer kometenhaften Karriere. Zwischen 1965 und 1975 hatten 'The Temptations' 16 Nr. 1 Hitsingles in den US-Billboard Charts und erhielten 3 Grammy-Awards. 1989 wurden sie sogar in die Rock'n'Roll-Hall-of-Fame aufgenommen. TV-Profi Allan Arkush ('Heroes', 'Ally McBeal') verfilmte die Erinnerung von Bandmitglied Otis Williams in 'The Temptations - Aufstieg in den Pop-Olymp' (1998) als liebevolle Rekonstruktion der Temptations-Zeit und der einzigartigen Magie ihrer Musik. 1999 erhielt er den Emmy-Award für die beste Regie.

The musicians arrive, but have only moderate success. Until producer Johnnie Mae Matthews (Vanessa Bell Calloway) becomes aware of her and manages her from then on. At the same time, Eddie Kendricks (Terron Brooks) and Paul Williams (Christian Payton) also try their luck in the Detroit music business. They call themselves 'The Primes' and already have the contract with Berry Gordy (Obba Babatundé), the famous Motown mogul, in their pockets. The circumstances lead to the four thoroughbred musicians finally founding the group 'The Temptations' and, together with the fifth band member, landing their first joint hit 'The Way You Do The Things You Do'. Between 1965 and 1975, 'The Temptations' had 16 No. 1 hit singles on the US Billboard charts and received 3 Grammy Awards. In 1989, they were even inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. TV professional Allan Arkush ('Heroes', 'Ally McBeal') filmed the memory of band member Otis Williams in 'The Temptations' (1998) as a loving reconstruction of the Temptations era and the unique magic of their music. In 1999 he received the Emmy Award for Best Director.
