Die Geschichte einer Filmcrew, die in den 1950er einen amerikanischen Spielfilm in Spanien drehen will: Die spanische Schauspielerin Macarena Granada (Penélope Cruz), die in Hollywood Karriere gemacht hat, kehrt Mitte der 1950er Jahre in ihre Heimat zurück, die sie seit ihrer Flucht während des Bürgerkrieges nicht mehr betreten hat. In einem amerikanischen Blockbuster soll sie nun Königin Isabella I. von Kastilien spielen. Bei den Dreharbeiten trifft Macarena nicht nur viele ehemalige Weggefährten wieder, sondern muss auch eine Begegnung mit dem von ihr verachteten Diktator Franco (Carlos Areces) überstehen, der die Dreharbeiten begutachten will. Als einer ihrer engsten Freunde in ein Arbeitslager verschleppt wird, nutzt sie all ihr schauspielerisches Können, um ihn zu retten. Zusammen mit ihren Freunden und einer Gruppe Widerstandskämpfern, beginnt eine irrwitzige Rettungsaktion...

The story of a film crew that wants to shoot an American feature film in Spain in the 1950s: Spanish actress Macarena Granada (Penélope Cruz), who has made a career in Hollywood, returns to her homeland in the mid-1950s, which she has not set foot on since fleeing during the civil war. In an American blockbuster, she is now to play Queen Isabella I of Castile. During the filming, Macarena not only meets many former companions again, but also has to survive an encounter with the dictator Franco (Carlos Areces), whom she despises, who wants to inspect the filming. When one of her closest friends is deported to a labor camp, she uses all her acting skills to save him. Together with her friends and a group of resistance fighters, a crazy rescue operation begins...
The film-within-a-film drama 'The Queen of Spain' (2016) by director Fernando Trueba follows on from his film 'The Girl of Your Dreams'. In the leading role is the truly royal Penélope Cruz ('Murder on the Orient Express').
