1988 fliegt die zwanzigjährige Finnin Kirsi Marie Liimatainen in die DDR, um die Lehren von Marx und Lenin zu studieren. In ihrer Heimatstadt Tampere hatte sie Häuser besetzt, jetzt trifft sie an der FDJ-Jugendhochschule 'Wilhelm Pieck' am Bogensee in der Nähe Berlins auf Gleichgesinnte aus über achtzig Ländern. Sie sind Funktionäre, Befreiungskämpfer oder linke Aktivisten. Darunter auch 'Illegale', die aus dem Untergrund kommen und zum Schutz Decknamen tragen. Lauter junge Menschen, vereint in ihrer Hoffnung auf eine bessere Welt. Doch während die Studenten die internationale Solidarität hochleben lassen, weckt der sozialistische DDR-Alltag Zweifel, ob die Theorie in der Praxis bestehen kann. Im Sommer 1989 endet das Studienjahr, die Studenten verteilen sich wieder in der ganzen Welt. Wenige Monate später fällt die Berliner Mauer. Über zwanzig Jahre später sucht Kirsi, die heute Filmemacherin ist, ihre Kameraden von damals. Sie will wissen, was in einer globalisierten Welt übrig geblieben ist vom großen Traum der Revolution. Sind die alten Ideale von Gleichheit, Gerechtigkeit und Solidarität nichts mehr wert?
'Comrade, Where Are You Today?' nennt sie ihren Dokumentarfilm, der sie rund um den Globus führt - nach Bolivien, Chile, in den Libanon und nach Südafrika. Dabei entsteht ein einzigartiger Blick auf Geschichte und Gegenwart linker Bewegungen. In 1988, the twenty-year-old Finn Kirsi Marie Liimatainen flew to the GDR to study the teachings of Marx and Lenin. She had squatted houses in her hometown of Tampere, and now she meets like-minded people from over eighty countries at the FDJ youth college 'Wilhelm Pieck' on Bogensee near Berlin. They are functionaries, liberation fighters or left-wing activists. Among them are 'illegals' who come from the underground and have aliases for protection. All young people, united in their hope for a better world. But while the students celebrate international solidarity, everyday socialist life in the GDR raises doubts as to whether theory can hold its own in practice. In the summer of 1989, the academic year ends, and the students are once again spread all over the world. A few months later, the Berlin Wall fell. More than twenty years later, Kirsi, who is now a filmmaker, is looking for her comrades from back then. She wants to know what is left of the great dream of revolution in a globalized world. Are the old ideals of equality, justice and solidarity no longer worth anything?
'Comrade, Where Are You Today?' is the title of her documentary, which takes her around the globe - to Bolivia, Chile, Lebanon and South Africa. The result is a unique view of the history and present of left-wing movements. 'Comrade, Where Are You Today?' is a personal journey through time and space - from the conviction of international solidarity to the disappointment of a world without ideals and the eternal search for justice.
