Jacob Kaplan (Héctor Noguera) ist 76 Jahre alt, lebt in Montevideo und hat noch immer keine Heldentat vollbracht. Wenig unterscheidet ihn von seinen alten Freunden in der jüdischen Gemeinde, die einen sonnenverwöhnten, aber schrecklich gewöhnlichen Lebensabend verbringen. Doch in Jacob grummelt der Ärger darüber, dass er sein Leben einfach so verstreichen ließ, ohne dass die Welt durch ihn eine bessere wurde. Hinzu kommt die leidige Sehschwäche, die Jacob unerbittlich daran erinnert, dass die Uhr tickt. Aber als in der Gemeinde das Gerücht kursiert, ein deutscher Nazi halte sich seit Jahren an der Küste Uruguays versteckt, klopft die Gelegenheit an. Jacob verpflichtet den chaotischen und chronisch abgebrannten Ex-Polizisten Wilson, mit ihm auf Nazijagd zu gehen. Gemeinsam entdecken sie vielsagende Spuren, die der Deutsche (Rolf Becker) über die Jahre beinahe erfolgreich verwischt hat, um ihn am Ende, so hofft Jacob Kaplan, den israelischen Behörden zu übergeben. Doch die internationale Operation, die die beiden anzetteln, ist gefährlicher als sie denken. Denn gerade als ihr ausgeklügelter Entführungsplan zwischen Tiefkühlfisch und Sinnsuche so richtig Fahrt aufnimmt, kommt der Deutsche ihnen auf die Schliche...
In glühend-warmen Farben erzählt Álvaro Brechner in der uruguayischen Komödie 'Senor Kaplan' (2014) von offenen Rechnungen mit der Geschichte und ungeraden Bilanzierungen im Alter. Mit der Leichtigkeit eines Strandausflugs erinnert der Film an eine allzu oft vergessene Vergangenheit und macht augenzwinkernd deutlich, dass auch ein Nilpferd-Narkotikum dem kollektivem Gedächtnis auf die Sprünge helfen kann.

There is little to distinguish him from his old friends in the Jewish community, who spend a sun-drenched but terribly ordinary retirement. But Jacob's anger is rumbling about the fact that he just let his life pass without making the world a better place because of him. In addition, there is the annoying visual impairment, which relentlessly reminds Jacob that the clock is ticking. But when a rumor circulates in the community that a German Nazi has been hiding on the coast of Uruguay for years, the opportunity comes knocking: Jacob engages the chaotic and chronically burned-out ex-policeman Wilson to go on a Nazi hunt with him. Together they discover telling traces that the German (Rolf Becker) has almost successfully covered over the years, only to end up with the Israeli authorities, Jacob Kaplan hopes. But the international operation that the two instigate is more dangerous than they think. Because just as their elaborate kidnapping plan between frozen fish and search for meaning really picks up speed, the German finds out about them...
In the Uruguayan comedy 'Senor Kaplan' (2014), Álvaro Brechner tells of unfinished accounts with history and odd balances in old age in glowing, warm colours. With the lightness of a beach trip, the film reminds us of an all too often forgotten past and makes it clear with a wink that even a hippopotamus narcotic can help the collective memory.
