Die schöne junge Maya (Deepa Sahi) hat ihren Kopf voller Träume und Sehnsüchte. Eines Tages stürzt ihr Vater die Treppe herunter und bricht sich einen Fuß. Ein junger Landarzt kommt, um ihn zu behandeln. Sofort erblüht die Liebe zwischen dem Arzt und Maya und sie heiraten kurze Zeit später. Der Beginn des neuen Lebens, die Umgestaltung des Hauses und die gegenseitige Entdeckung verleiht ihren Gefühlen Euphorie. Doch allmählich setzt die Monotonie der Ehe ein. Die Langeweile der Kleinstadt und ihre Mittelklasse-Existenz bedrücken Maya und sie beginnt eine Reihe außerehelicher Affären. Zur gleichen Zeit wie ihre Phantasien von Romantik und Leidenschaft steigt ihr Verlangen nach einem glamourösen Leben. Sie sucht Zuflucht im Besitz von Luxussymbolen und hofft, dass sie ihr Zufriedenheit bringen, doch sie helfen nur, ihre Schuld und Verzweiflung zu vervielfachen. Selbst eine weitere außereheliche Beziehung, zunächst platonisch, dann leidenschaftlich, endet enttäuschend und lässt sie erkennen, dass Ehebruch genau so banal ist wie Heirat. Je mehr sie von der Realität desillusioniert ist, zwischen Lalit (Shah Rukh Khan) und Rudra (Raj Babbar), umso mehr gleitet sie in ihre Fantasiewelt ab. Sie jagt sich selbst hinterher - Luftschlösser bauend - bis zu ihren tragischen, komischen, heroischen und magischen Ende.

The beautiful young Maya (Deepa Sahi) has her head full of dreams and longings. One day, her father falls down the stairs and breaks his foot. A young country doctor comes to treat him. Immediately, the love between the doctor and Maya blossoms and they marry a short time later. The beginning of the new life, the remodeling of the house and the mutual discovery gives euphoria to their feelings. But gradually the monotony of marriage sets in. The boredom of the small town and her middle-class existence depress Maya and she begins a series of extramarital affairs. At the same time as her fantasies of romance and passion grow, her desire for a glamorous life increases. She seeks refuge in the possession of luxury symbols and hopes that they will bring her satisfaction, but they only help to multiply her guilt and despair. Even another extramarital relationship, first platonic, then passionate, ends disappointingly and makes her realize that adultery is just as banal as marriage. The more she is disillusioned with reality, between Lalit (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rudra (Raj Babbar), the more she slips into her fantasy world. She chases herself - building castles in the air - until her tragic, comical, heroic and magical ends.
