John Hustons letzter Film ist eine Adaption von James Joyces Kurzgeschichte 'The Dead - Die Toten' und eine Liebeserklärung an Irland und seine Menschen. Das Drehbuch entstand nach der letzten Kurzgeschichte 'Die Toten' aus der Sammlung 'Dubliners', die James Joyce im Jahr 1914 veröffentlichte. James Joyce, geboren 1882 in Dublin, gestorben 1941 in Zürich, wurde vor allem als Verfasser der Romane 'Ulysses' (1922) und 'Finnegans Totenwache' (1939) bekannt. 'Die Toten' wurden in der Kategorie bestes adaptiertes Drehbuch und Kostüm für den 'Oscar' nominiert. John Huston wurde für den Film mit verschiedenen Preisen ausgezeichnet, u.a. erhielt er den 'Bodil Award' und den 'Fotogramas de Plata'.

The screenplay was based on the last short story 'The Dead' from the collection 'Dubliners', which James Joyce published in 1914. James Joyce, born in Dublin in 1882 and died in Zurich in 1941, is best known as the author of the novels 'Ulysses' (1922) and 'Finnegan's Wake' (1939). 'The Dead' was nominated for the 'Oscar' in the category of best adapted screenplay and costume. John Huston was awarded various prizes for the film, including the 'Bodil Award' and the 'Fotogramas de Plata'.
