Abseits von der Großstadt liegt das Hotel tief verborgen im finsteren Wald. Abseits von jeglicher Zivilisation findet man hier die magische Atmosphäre einer so fantastischen wie rätselhaften Ruhe. Als Irene (Franziska Weisz) im Waldhotel ihre neue Stelle als Rezeptionistin antritt, ist auch sie fasziniert von dieser Abgeschiedenheit. Doch bald stellt sie fest, dass ihre Vorgängerin auf mysteriöse Weise verschwunden ist, und Irene beginnt, der großen Stille zu misstrauen. Die labyrinthischen Hotelflure und verwaisten Passagen führen ins Nichts, die restliche Belegschaft scheint ebenso feindselig wie desintressiert. Schleichend verwebt sich ihr eigenes Schicksal mit dem ihrer Vorgängerin und Irene folgt der Fährten, die sie immer tiefer in Wald führen. Bald sieht sie sich von einer geheimnisvollen Gefahr bedroht, der sie verzweifelt zu entrinnen versucht...
Mit stilistischer Meisterschaft gelang Jessica Hausner eine eigene, extrem spannungsreiche Form des Mystery-Films zwischen Hitchcocks Suspense-Thrillern und Stanley Kubricks 'Shining'. So präzise die unbekannte Gefahr inszeniert ist, so konsequent ist der Film, die Erwartungen des Zuschauers immer wieder spielerisch zu unterlaufen. 'Hotel' wurde auf der Diagonale 2005 als bester Film ausgezeichnet.

Away from the big city, the hotel is hidden deep in the dark forest. Away from any civilization, you will find the magical atmosphere of a peace that is as fantastic as it is enigmatic. When Irene (Franziska Weisz) starts her new job as a receptionist at the Waldhotel, she is also fascinated by this seclusion. But soon she realizes that her predecessor has mysteriously disappeared, and Irene begins to distrust the great silence. The labyrinthine hotel corridors and deserted passages lead nowhere, the rest of the staff seems as hostile as they are disinterested. Creepingly, her own fate interweaves with that of her predecessor and Irene follows the tracks that lead her deeper and deeper into the forest. Soon she finds herself threatened by a mysterious danger, which she desperately tries to escape...
With stylistic mastery, Jessica Hausner succeeded in creating her own, extremely suspenseful form of mystery film between Hitchcock's suspense thrillers and Stanley Kubrick's 'Shining'. As precisely as the unknown danger is staged, the film is consistent in playfully subverting the viewer's expectations again and again. 'Hotel' was awarded best film at the Diagonale 2005.
