Zusätzlich gerät er unter Druck, weil die junge, drogenabhängige Casey (Emily Fairn) dem Dealer Carl (Ian Hart), mit dem er zur Schule gegangen ist, Drogen gestohlen hat. Sein desolater Zustand bleibt nicht unbemerkt, seit er die Polizistin Rachel Hargreaves (Adelayo Adedayo) als Partnerin an seiner Seite hat. Sie misstraut Chris, weil sie merkt, dass er psychische Probleme hat und sich nicht immer an die Vorschriften hält. Doch schon bald wird klar, dass ihr beider Überleben davon abhängt, ob sie sich gegenseitig helfen oder schaden. Denn Chris gerät immer tiefer in einen Strudel aus Problemen, der ihn weiter in den Abgrund zieht...
Die Crime-Serie 'The Responder' (2022) mit einem herausragenden Martin Freeman beruht auf den Erfahrungen des ehemaligen Polizeibeamten Tony Schumacher, fesselnd wie ein Thriller und erschütternd wie ein Dokumentarfilm. Authentisch in der Story, Brillanz im Cast, das macht aus 'The Responder' eine Ausnahme-Serie: Die 6 Episoden zeigen fünf Nachtschichten im Leben von Chris Carson. Was das Drama so unglaublich fesselnd macht, ist die Tatsache, dass die Story völlig authentisch wirkt. Und das kommt nicht von ungefähr: Das Drehbuch von Tony Schumacher, einem ehemaligen Liverpooler Polizisten und echten Responder, beruht auf dessen eigenen Erfahrungen. Sein Ansatz, eine Polizeiserie zu schreiben, die anders ist, ging voll auf. Für die Serie ein absoluter Glücksfall. Genauso ein Glücksfall ist, dass Superstar und Emmy-Preisträger Freeman ('Sherlock', 'Fargo', 'Der Hobbit') die Rolle der Hauptfigur übernahm. Freeman legt als Carson jede einzelne Facette aus Wut, Frustration und Verzweiflung frei. Interessanterweise hatte Schumacher beim Schreiben Freeman als Chris Carson bereits im Hinterkopf. Freeman liefert aber keine One-Man-Show sondern wird von einem ebenso brillanten Cast begleitet, darunter Ian Hart ('The Last Kingdom') als Carl, Adelayo Adedayo ('Timewasters') als Rachel sowie die Newcomer Emily Fairn und Josh Finan in den Rollen von Casey und Marco. Regisseur Tim Mielants ('Peaky Blinders'), der die Stadt Liverpool wie seine eigene Westentasche kennt, versteht es perfekt, die nächtliche Stimmung zu inszenieren. Das macht 'The Responder' interessant und besonders atmosphärisch. Freeman wurde dafür mit dem International-Emmy 2023 als bester Schauspieler für 'The Responder - Staffel 1' ausgezeichnet.

What makes the drama so incredibly captivating is the fact that the story seems completely authentic. And that's no coincidence: The script by Tony Schumacher, a former Liverpool policeman and real responder, is based on his own experiences. His approach to writing a police series that is different was a complete success. An absolute stroke of luck for the series. Just as a stroke of luck is that superstar and Emmy Award winner Freeman ('Sherlock', 'Fargo', 'The Hobbit') took on the role of the main character. Freeman as Carson exposes every single facet of anger, frustration and despair. Interestingly, Schumacher already had Freeman as Chris Carson in mind when he was writing. Freeman doesn't deliver a one-man show, however, but is accompanied by an equally brilliant cast, including Ian Hart ('The Last Kingdom') as Carl, Adelayo Adedayo ('Timewasters') as Rachel and newcomers Emily Fairn and Josh Finan in the roles of Casey and Marco. Director Tim Mielants ('Peaky Blinders'), who knows the city of Liverpool like the back of his hand, knows how to stage the nocturnal atmosphere perfectly. This makes 'The Responder' interesting and particularly atmospheric. Freeman was awarded the 2023 International Emmy for Best Actor for 'The Responder - Season 1'.
