Der kaum bekannte Schauspieler Jack Noah (Richard Dreyfuss) dreht gerade in 'Parador', einem kleinen südamerikanischen Land, als der dortige Diktator Alphonse Simms plötzlich stirbt. Da er den Diktator vorher parodiert hat, verfällt dessen rechte Hand Roberto Strausmann (Raul Julia) auf die Idee, Noah dessen Rolle nach dem Tod weiterspielen zu lassen, bis die brisante politische Situation in warmen Tüchern ist. Noah nimmt an und findet sich plötzlich auf heißem Parkett wieder. Während die Massen leicht einzufangen sind, sind es Freunde und Familie Alphonses nicht und Jack hat alle Hände voll zu tun, nicht enttarnt zu werden...

The little-known actor Jack Noah (Richard Dreyfuss) is filming in 'Parador', a small South American country, when the dictator Alphonse Simms dies suddenly. Since he has parodied the dictator beforehand, his right-hand man Roberto Strausmann (Raul Julia) comes up with the idea of letting Noah continue to play his role after death until the explosive political situation is in the dust. Noah accepts and suddenly finds himself on hot parquet. While the crowds are easy to capture, Alphonse's friends and family are not, and Jack has his hands full not being exposed...
