Ein ZDF-Team und internationale Forscher entdecken Beweise für eine ungeheure Naturkatastrophe, die den bisher unerforschten Mythos der biblische Sintflut bestätigen könnte: Jeder Mensch kennt die Geschichte von Noah, der ein Schiff baut und alle Tiere der Welt darin aufnimmt, um der Sintflut zu trotzen. Was bisher als unerforschlicher Mythos, als tausendfach erzählte Legende galt, gewinnt im Licht neuerer wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen historische Realität. Das ZDF-Team begleitet im Sommer 2005 eine Expedition israelischer und US-amerikanischer Ozeanologen zum Schwarzen Meer. Die Experten untersuchen den Meeresuntergrund und finden Beweise für eine ungeheure Naturkatastrophe, die sich vor 7.500 Jahren im Vorderen Orient zugetragen hat und vielleicht die biblische Sintflut war. Filmaufnahmen an den landschaftlich einmaligen Orten der Ereignisse im Kaukasus, im Osten Anatoliens und am Schwarzen Meer nehmen den Zuschauer mit auf die Reise in eine archaische Welt. Anhand von Gesprächen mit Experten, naturwissenschaftlichen Experimenten, moderner Satellitenfotografie und szenischer Rekonstruktionen wird versucht, Antworten auf eines der größten Rätsel der Bibel zu finden: auf das Rätsel der Sintflut.

A ZDF team and international researchers discover evidence of a monstrous natural disaster that could confirm the previously unexplored myth of the biblical flood: Everyone knows the story of Noah, who builds a ship and takes in all the animals of the world in order to defy the flood. What was previously considered an unfathomable myth, a legend told a thousand times, is gaining historical reality in the light of recent scientific investigations. In the summer of 2005, the ZDF team accompanied an expedition of Israeli and US oceanologists to the Black Sea. The experts examine the seabed and find evidence of a monstrous natural disaster that occurred 7,500 years ago in the Middle East and may have been the biblical flood. Film footage at the scenically unique locations of the events in the Caucasus, in eastern Anatolia and on the Black Sea takes the viewer on a journey into an archaic world. Through conversations with experts, scientific experiments, modern satellite photography and scenic reconstructions, it attempts to find answers to one of the greatest mysteries of the Bible: the riddle of the Flood.
