Sommer im Norden Deutschlands. Die 40-jährige Miriam (Martina Gedeck) verbringt zusammen mit ihrem Lebensgefährten André (Peter Davor), ihrem gemeinsamen Sohn Nils (Lucas Kotaranin) und dessen 12-jähriger Freundin Livia (Svea Lohde) die Sommerferien in ihrem Haus an der Schlei. Zunächst läuft alles nach Plan. Die Vier gehen Segeln, treiben Sport, essen gemeinsam. Ein ganz normaler Urlaub, ein ganz normaler Sommer, bis die scheinbare Idylle durch den Auftritt eines Fremden gestört wird. Livia lernt beim Segeln Bill (Robert Seeliger) kennen, einen 38-jährigen Amerikaner, der sich an der Schlei ein Haus gekauft hat. Miriam beobachtet besorgt, wie sich zwischen der unbedarften 12-jährigen und dem attraktiven Mann ein Liebesverhältnis anzubahnen scheint. Sie fühlt sich für Livia verantwortlich und will eingreifen. Doch aus der Fürsorge für Livia entwickelt sich bald ein Konkurrenzverhältnis zu dem jungen Mädchen. Denn Miriam findet selbst Gefallen an Bill und beginnt eine Affäre mit ihm. Bald weiß sie nicht mehr, ob sie Livia aus Eifersucht von Bill fernhält, oder um sie vor jugendlichen Fehlern zu schützen. Miriam verliert nach und nach die Kontrolle über die Ereignisse. Sie weiß nicht, ob sie Bill verachtet oder liebt. Und sie weiß nicht mehr, wie sie ihrem Freund André und ihrem Sohn Nils begegnen soll. In den nächsten Tagen unternimmt Miriam gemeinsam mit André, Nils und Livia einen Segelausflug, bei dem sich Miriam und das Mädchen ein Boot teilen. Sie sucht das Gespräch mit Livia. Doch durch das Umschlagen des Segels wird Livia hart am Kopf getroffen, ihr wird schlecht und sie will sofort zurück an Land. Miriam hält das alles für einen Vorwand, um nur schneller wieder bei Bill zu sein. Erst zu spät merkt sie, dass Livia wirklich Hilfe braucht.

Summer in the north of Germany. 40-year-old Miriam (Martina Gedeck) spends the summer holidays together with her partner André (Peter Davor), their son Nils (Lucas Kotaranin) and his 12-year-old girlfriend Livia (Svea Lohde) in their house on the Schlei. At first, everything goes according to plan. The four go sailing, do sports, eat together. A completely normal holiday, a completely normal summer, until the apparent idyll is disturbed by the appearance of a stranger. While sailing, Livia meets Bill (Robert Seeliger), a 38-year-old American who has bought a house on the Schlei. Miriam watches with concern as a love affair seems to be brewing between the naïve 12-year-old and the attractive man. She feels responsible for Livia and wants to intervene. But the care for Livia soon develops into a competitive relationship with the young girl. Because Miriam takes a liking to Bill herself and starts an affair with him. Soon she no longer knows whether she is keeping Livia away from Bill out of jealousy or to protect her from youthful mistakes. Miriam gradually loses control of events. She doesn't know if she despises or loves Bill. And she no longer knows how to meet her boyfriend André and her son Nils. In the next few days, Miriam goes on a sailing trip together with André, Nils and Livia, during which Miriam and the girl share a boat. She seeks a conversation with Livia. But when the sail is turned, Livia is hit the head, she feels sick and wants to go back to land immediately. Miriam thinks all this is an excuse to get back to Bill faster. It is only too late that she realizes that Livia really needs help.
