Im April 1943 kommt eine Kompanie der französischen Fremdenlegion in die tunesische Wüstenstadt 'El Ksour'. Die Legionäre haben den Auftrag, Goldbarren im Wert von sechs Milliarden Francs aus einem dortigen Banktresor sicherzustellen und nach 'Sfax' zu bringen. Das Unternehmen entpuppt sich als Himmelfahrtskommando, da Soldaten des deutschen Afrikakorps den Legionären auflauern und die meisten von ihnen töten. Nur vier überleben, zu ihnen gehört Sergeant Pierre Augagneur (Jean-Paul Belmondo). Als die Deutschen sich unter großen Verlusten zurückgezogen haben, sieht er die Chance seines Lebens und schlägt den drei anderen vor, das Gold für sich zu kassieren und untereinander aufzuteilen. Bei seinem Kameraden Boissier (Michel Creton) findet Augagneur dafür offene Ohren, der dicke Legionär Béral (Jacques Villeret) schwankt, Adjudant Édouard Mahuzard (Michel Constantin) will nichts davon wissen. Um doch zum Zuge, und vor allem an das Gold im Tresor heranzukommen, verbündet sich der Sergeant mit der Frau des Bankdirektors. Sie ist ein ziemliches Früchtchen und hat zudem noch einen deutschen Liebhaber, der ebenfalls auf das Gold erpicht ist. Augagneur hat jedoch wenig Lust, die erhoffte Beute mit windigen Burschen zu teilen.

In April 1943, a company of the French Foreign Legion arrives in the Tunisian desert town of 'El Ksour'. The legionnaires have the task of securing gold bars worth six billion francs from a bank vault there and bringing them to 'Sfax'. The operation turns out to be an ascension commando, as soldiers of the German Afrika Korps lie in wait for the legionnaires and kill most of them. Only four survive, one of them is Sergeant Pierre Augagneur (Jean-Paul Belmondo). When the Germans have withdrawn with great losses, he sees the opportunity of a lifetime and suggests to the three others that they collect the gold for themselves and divide it among themselves. Augagneur finds open ears with his comrade Boissier (Michel Creton), the fat legionnaire Béral (Jacques Villeret) hesitates, adjutant Édouard Mahuzard (Michel Constantin) wants nothing to do with it. In order to get his chance, and above all to get hold of the gold in the vault, the sergeant allies himself with the wife of the bank director. She is quite a fruit and also has a German lover who is also eager for the gold. Augagneur, however, has little desire to share the hoped-for loot with windy boys.
