Die Familie besteht aus vier Generationen, die die gesamte Entwicklung der kubanischen Revolution in den letzten 50 Jahren durchlebt hat. Was ist aus den Anliegen, Träumen und Hoffnungen der Revolution geworden? Was wird die Zukunft bringen? Über sieben Jahre wurde die Familie Torres vor Ort in Havanna gefilmt. Der Regisseur begleitete den Alltag der Familie und ihrer Freunde, erlebte sie bei den Herausforderungen des täglichen Lebens. Wenn der Strom ausfällt, das Wasser nur mit Trickserei fließt, wenn man sich darüber wundert dass es auch nach 40 Jahren nur eine Sorte Brot zu kaufen gibt; wie schmerzhaft es ist, wenn der Sohn das Land verlässt und aus den USA nicht wiederkehrt; aber auch viel Liebe und Patriotismus für das Land, die Heimat, die Revolution sich offenbart. Martins Filmporträt dokumentiert all dies ohne Wertung, mit viel Sensibilität, ganz nah an den Menschen, ihrer Situation, ihren Gefühlen...
Der Dokumentarfilm 'A Letter to the Future' (2011) ist ein eindrucksvolles Porträt einer vielfältigen Gesellschaft. Aus historischem Bildmaterial, Super-8-Filmen und Amateurvideo-Footage sowie aktuellem, hochwertigen DV- und Super-16-Aufnahmen ist eine bewegende Dokumentation entstanden, die über 50 Jahre emotionale Geschichte eines ungewöhnlichen, rätselhaften und mythischen Landes und Systems zeigt. 'A Letter to the Future' ist dabei auch ein Film über die Kraft von Familien, Freundschaften und die immerwährende Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben. In 'A Letter to the Future', director Renato Martins shows the emotional portrait of the Cuban Torres family. The family consists of four generations that have lived through the entire development of the Cuban Revolution over the last 50 years. What has become of the concerns, dreams and hopes of the revolution? What will the future bring? For over seven years, the Torres family was filmed on location in Havana. The director accompanied the everyday life of the family and their friends, experiencing them in the challenges of daily life. When the electricity fails, the water only flows with trickery, when you are surprised that even after 40 years there is only one type of bread to buy; how painful it is when the son leaves the country and does not return from the USA; but also a lot of love and patriotism for the country, the homeland, the revolution is revealed. Martin's film portrait documents all this without judgement, with a lot of sensitivity, very close to the people, their situation, their feelings...
