Auch wenn sich alles in ihr dagegen sträubt, länger als nötig in dieser verlassenen Gegend mit ihren verschrobenen Einwohnern zu bleiben. Dass das Leben im ländlichen Burgund etwas rauer als in Paris ist, muss sie - mit anpackendem Charme gespielt von Noémie Schmidt - ernüchternd feststellen. Für die Zuschauer:innen ist genau das ein großes Vergnügen. Denn immer wieder gibt es Situationen, in denen sich der Culture-Clash zwischen Stadt und Land zeigt und beide Seiten ihre Vorurteile gegenüber entweder bestätigt sehen, oder auch überdenken müssen...
Im Gegensatz zu anderen französischen Komödien verzichtet Regisseurin Julie Manoukian in 'Plötzlich aufs Land - Eine Tierärztin im Burgund' (2019) mit Noémie Schmidt als Alex, Clovis Cornillac als Nico und Carole Franck als Lila auf starke Figurenüberzeichnungen oder überhöht malerische Landschaften. Eher zeigt sie das französische Land und seine Bewohner mit gesundem Realismus so, wie es ist: rau, eigen und trotz aller Härte liebenswert. Passend dazu untermalen keine lieblichen Chansons die Szenerie, sondern eine stimmungsvolle Bluegrass-Musik, was die Vorgaben des Genres selbstbewusst gegen den Strich bürstet. Manoukian beweist einen sehr genauen Blick für das Zwischenmenschliche und erzählt unaufgeregt von einer jungen Frau, die von ihrem geplanten Lebensweg abweichen muss, um ihre eigentliche Bestimmung zu finden.

Even if everything in her resists staying longer than necessary in this deserted area with its eccentric inhabitants. The fact that life in rural Burgundy is a bit rougher than in Paris is something she has to realize - played with gripping charm by Noémie Schmidt - soberingly. For the viewers, this is exactly what is a great pleasure. Because again and again there are situations in which the culture clash between city and country shows up and both sides either see their prejudices confirmed, or have to rethink them...
In contrast to other French comedies, director Julie Manoukian refrains from strong character exaggerations or exaggerated picturesque landscapes in 'Suddenly in the Country - A Veterinarian in Burgundy' (2019) with Noémie Schmidt as Alex, Clovis Cornillac as Nico and Carole Franck as Lila. Rather, she shows the French countryside and its inhabitants with healthy realism as it is: rough, peculiar and, despite all the harshness, endearing. Fittingly, no lovely chansons underline the scenery, but atmospheric bluegrass music, which confidently brushes the specifications of the genre against the grain. Manoukian demonstrates a very precise eye for interpersonal relationships and calmly tells the story of a young woman who has to deviate from her planned path in life in order to find her true destiny.
