Regisseur Talal Derki kehrt für seine Dokumentation 'Of Fathers and Sons - Die Kinder des Kalifats' in sein Heimatland zurück. Er gibt sich als Anhänger der Salafisten aus und gewinnt so das Vertrauen einer radikal-islamistischen Familie. Über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren begleitet er ihren Alltag und zeigt einzigartige und emotionale Einblicke in eine sonst hermetisch abgeriegelte Welt. 'Of Fathers and Sons' wurde schließlich in die offizielle Auswahl für den 'Oscar' 2019 in der Kategorie 'Bester Dokumentarfilm' aufgenommen. Er lief auf über 100 Festivals weltweit und wurde mit mehr als 20 Preisen ausgezeichnet. Der neue Dokumentarfilm von Talal Derki gewann unter anderem den renommierten 'World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize' des Sundance-Filmfestivals 2018 und den Fritz-Gerlich-Preis beim 36. Filmfest München. 'Of Fathers and Sons' war für den Europäischen Filmpreis 2018 nominiert und kam in der Vorauswahl für den Deutschen Filmpreis 2019. Es erforderte viel Mut und Durchsetzungsvermögen, um hinter die Kulissen dieser hermetisch abgeschlossenen Gemeinschaft in seiner Heimat blicken zu können: Derki zeigt den Alltag einer radikal-islamistischen Großfamilie im vom Krieg verwüsteten Syrien aus einer noch nie gezeigten Perspektive. Um sich frei bewegen und drehen zu können, hat sich der in Berlin lebende Regisseur als Kriegsreporter und Anhänger des Salafismus ausgegeben und schrittweise das Vertrauen des Clans gewonnen. Im Zentrum steht der Rebellenführer Abu Osama, der seine heranwachsenden Söhne zu furchtlosen Gotteskriegern erziehen will, ohne Rücksicht auf ihr Alter oder ihre persönliche Entwicklung. 'Port au Prince Pictures' brachten den Film am 21. März 2019 in die deutschen Kinos, eine deutsch-syrisch-libanesisch-katarische Produktion von der 'Basis Berlin Filmproduktion' in Koproduktion mit 'Ventana Film', 'Cinema Group Production', dem 'SWR' und 'RBB' in Zusammenarbeit mit 'Arte' und 'Impact Partners'. Gefördert vom Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, IDFA Bertha Fund, The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Screen Institute Beirut, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), Deutscher Filmförderfonds (DFFF), Doha Film Institute (DFI) und The Netherlands Consulate General (Special Advisor for Syria). 'Of Fathers and Sons' wurde zwischen Sommer 2014 und September 2016 gedreht. Während dieser Zeit verbrachten Talal Derki und sein Kameramann Kahtan Hasson mehr als 300 Tage mit der Familie. Abu Osama starb im Oktober 2018 beim Entschärfen einer Autobombe. Er hinterlässt zwei Ehefrauen und zwölf Kinder.

Director Talal Derki returns to his home country for his documentary 'Of Fathers and Sons'. He pretends to be a supporter of the Salafists and thus gains the trust of a radical Islamist family. Over a period of two years, he accompanies her everyday life and shows unique and emotional insights into an otherwise hermetically sealed world. 'Of Fathers and Sons' was finally included in the official selection for the 'Oscar' 2019 in the category 'Best Documentary'. It has been shown at over 100 festivals worldwide and has been awarded more than 20 prizes. The new documentary by Talal Derki won the prestigious 'World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize' at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and the Fritz Gerlich Prize at the 36th Munich Film Festival, among others. 'Of Fathers and Sons' was nominated for the European Film Award 2018 and was shortlisted for the German Film Award 2019. It took a lot of courage and assertiveness to be able to look behind the scenes of this hermetically sealed community in his homeland: Derki shows the everyday life of a radical Islamist extended family in war-ravaged Syria from a perspective never seen before. In order to be able to move and shoot freely, the Berlin-based director posed as a war reporter and supporter of Salafism and gradually gained the trust of the clan. At the center is the rebel leader Abu Osama, who wants to raise his adolescent sons to be fearless holy warriors, regardless of their age or personal development. 'Port au Prince Pictures' brought the film to German cinemas on March 21, 2019, a German-Syrian-Lebanese-Qatari production by 'Basis Berlin Filmproduktion' in co-production with 'Ventana Film', 'Cinema Group Production', 'SWR' and 'RBB' in cooperation with 'Arte' and 'Impact Partners'. Funded by the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, IDFA Bertha Fund, The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Screen Institute Beirut, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), German Film Fund (DFFF), Doha Film Institute (DFI) and The Netherlands Consulate General (Special Advisor for Syria). 'Of Fathers and Sons' was filmed between summer 2014 and September 2016. During this time, Talal Derki and his cameraman Kahtan Hasson spent more than 300 days with the family. Abu Osama died in October 2018 while defusing a car bomb. He leaves behind two wives and twelve children.
